EU/IMF mission to Ireland to begin Thursday: minister
DUBLIN (AFP) - – A European and International Monetary Fund mission to examine Ireland's finances and debt-ridden banking sector will begin here on Thursday, Finance Minister Brian Lenihan said Wednesday.
"What we have agreed to do is to look at the structural problems in the Irish banks in the light of recent market pressures and assess what needs to be done because banking questions are technical and difficult," he told RTE radio.
"An intensive engagement will now take place which will ensure that we can stabilise our banking sector. The discussions will begin on Thursday."
Asked if there could be an outcome by the weekend, Lenihan said: "We haven't set deadlines on this but it is urgent and it will be focused."
He said the European Central Bank stood fully behind Ireland's banking system and there were no funding difficulties.
"What is important is that we look at the structural problems that are in the system and address them and that is what this mission is about."
Asked when the government would make its mind up about whether a rescue package was needed, Lenihan said his mandate at Tuesday's eurozone finance ministers' meeting in Brussels was to confirm that Ireland would work with its European partners "to solve these difficulties".
"We are determined to do that and we will look at what is the best way to provide any necessary support to address market risks in the banks.
"Clearly despite an amount of work done to support the Irish banking sector the dislocation has persisted, market conditions have not normalised."
Lenihan said that if action was needed on a European-wide basis it would be taken.
"We have that full assurance," he said.
On the possibility of separate assistance from Britain, Lenihan said: "If Britain wishes to participate, that is a matter for Britain in the event that a package is needed.
"I know they see Ireland as one of their best customers and the United Kingdom is anxious to help in every possible way but I don't want to pre-empt their right to make their own decision in a matter of this type."
