Beatles' hits come to Apple's iTunes store
NEW YORK - It's been a long and winding road, but the Beatles are finally available on iTunes. The legendary pop group's 13 albums can now be downloaded through the world's No. 1 digital music retailer, Apple Inc <AAPL.O> said on Tuesday.
U.S. sees "huge" cyber threat in the future
WASHINGTON - The United States faces a major threat in the future from cyber technologies that will require civil-military coordination to shield networks from attack, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Tuesday. "I think there is a huge future threat. And there is a considerable current threat," Gates told The Wall Street Journal CEO Council. "And that's just the reality that we all face."
Barnes & Noble says shipments of NookColor start
NEW YORK - Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> said on Tuesday that it has begun shipping its NookColor ahead of schedule to shoppers who pre-ordered the e-reader device on its web site and in its bricks-and-mortar stores. But the company said there may initially be "limited inventory" of the $249 device, launched last month, in its stores and at other retailers selling the e-reader, such as Best Buy Co Inc <BBY.N> and Wal-Mart Stores Inc <WMT.N>, because of what it said was strong demand for the NookColor.
Telcos form Isis mobile pay venture with Discover
NEW YORK - Three of the top four U.S. mobile phone operators -- Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc <T.N> and T-Mobile USA -- have formed a venture known as Isis aimed at building a national mobile payments network. Countries such as Japan have had mobile payment systems for years, that allows consumers to simply wave their phone at a terminal to pay for items such as train tickets.
Microsoft's Gates, Ballmer defend stock sales
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> Chairman Bill Gates and Chief Executive Steve Ballmer defended recent stock sales on Tuesday as they faced tough questions from shareholders frustrated by the lack of growth in the company's shares over the past decade. Gates, who co-founded the company in 1975, sells 20 million shares every quarter to help fund his philanthropic activities, while Ballmer is planning to sell 75 million shares by year end for tax planning reasons.
Steve Forbes gives up CEO reins at Forbes Media
LOS ANGELES - Media veteran Mike Perlis was named president and chief executive officer of Forbes Media, taking over executive duties from Steve Forbes and his brother Tim. Steve Forbes, who made failed runs for U.S. president in 1996 and 2000 in the Republican primary, had been CEO of the company and Tim Forbes was the chief operating officer.
Google's new phone software supports mobile payment
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc's <GOOG.O> next version of its Android smartphone software will support a technology that lets people use their handsets, instead of credit cards, to pay for goods at restaurants and stores. Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt showed off a yet-to-be-released phone on Monday with a special chip that allows consumers to quickly pay for items by tapping the phone against a special terminal.
Facebook takes on Google and Yahoo in Web messages
SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook rolled out an all-in-one messaging service that for the first time allows its half-billion members to communicate with people outside the social network, intensifying a battle with Google Inc <GOOG.O> and Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> for users' Internet time. Addressing speculation the world's largest social networking site was planning a "Gmail-killer," Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said the new system will let users own "@facebook.com" addresses, but stressed it went beyond mere email.
Microsoft says sells 1 million Kinect devices
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> said on Monday it has sold more than 1 million of its new hands-free Kinect gaming systems in the first 10 days since launch, putting it on track to beat its target of 5 million sales by the end of the year. The world's largest software company is hoping the Kinect will help revitalize sales of its Xbox game console this holiday shopping season and counter competing motion-based gaming systems from Nintendo Co <7974.OS>, which makes the Wii, and Sony Corp <6758.T>, which introduced its Move product two months ago.
Amazon weighed down by rivals' free shipping
NEW YORK - Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> shares tumbled as much as 4 percent on Monday on concerns that offers of free shipping by Wal-Mart Stores Inc <WMT.N> and other retailers could challenge the online company's results. Amazon shares have fallen $12.37, or 7.1 percent, since hitting a 52-week high of $173.37 last Wednesday.
