Deerfield Beach, FL, United States (AHN) - A Florida girl brutally beaten at a school bus stop is able to leave the hospital she's been in for nearly six weeks. The recovery of Josie Lou Ratley, 15, will now continue at an area rehabilitative center.

Ratley, who was hospitalized for 41 days, is still unable to talk, walk, or use her right arm and fingers although the extent of her injuries won't be known for several years. Despite the long road to recovery that still awaits the girl, one small step was made on Tuesday when she was discharged from intensive care at the Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. The last milestone at the hospital for the teen who was previously in a medically induced coma was having the feeding tube from her nose removed.

The family's lawyer said that Ratley's treatment at the undisclosed rehabilitation center will include occupational, physical and speech therapies. It is the hope that one day she will be able to walk and talk on her own.

The latest images released by the family show the teen's head free from bandages but a partially shaved head with a huge gash and stitches running along her scalp.

During a March 17 attack at a bus stop on the Deerfield Beach Middle School campus, Wayne Treacy, 15, allegedly stomped and kicked Ratley with steel-toed boots. During the beating, Ratley suffered brain damage and doctors were forced to replace part of her skull.

The beating by Treacy was allegedly sparked over a text message exchange the two shared. The boy will be charged as an adult and has already pleaded not guilty to first-degree attempted murder.
