Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Australia China India Indonesia Japan Malaysia Philippines Thailand Vietnam Poll: Philippine election front-runner widens lead AP - 1 hour 51 minutes ago Send IM Story Print MANILA, Philippines – An opposition senator and son of the Philippines' democracy icon Corazon Aquino has widened his lead over his closest rivals in the race for the presidency, an independent survey said Thursday. Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III has the support of four in 10 Filipinos with 39 percent of those responding to a survey conducted by pollster Pulse Asia. Support for rival Sen. Manny Villar, the country's wealthiest politician, has dropped from 25 to 20 percent from last month, leaving him tied with former President Joseph Estrada, Pulse Asia said. The survey, conducted April 23 to 25 with 1,800 adult respondents nationwide, has a margin of error of 2 percentage points. Starting from a tight race with Villar at the beginning of the campaign in January, Aquino, 50, has slowly emerged as a front-runner. A senator who served three terms as congressman, Aquino has been a quiet lawmaker and has struggled to step out from the shadow of his mother, who fought dictator Ferdinand Marcos and was swept to power in the 1986 "people power" revolt. He offered himself as a leader of moral and political renewal for the Philippines in response to a massive outpouring of grief and public sympathy following his mother's death from cancer in August. Aquino has anchored his campaign on fighting corruption and restoring the credibility of the judiciary and Congress, which he says have been seriously eroded by nine tumultuous years of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's rule. While Aquino is seen as the darling of the upper and middle classes, Villar, who made his fortune as a real estate developer, has been courting the votes of the poor with his rags-to-riches life story. A third of the population lives on a dollar a day, and about 3,000 Filipinos leave daily for jobs abroad. Estrada also is counting on poor voters and his popularity. The action movie star was elected in 1998 with one of the widest margins in Philippine history, but quickly polarized the nation with allegations of corruption leading to his downfall amid military-backed street protests in 2001. The results of the country's first automated election will be known within three days of the May 10 vote, the elections commission said, a departure from the laborious manual count that had bred suspicion of fraud and took weeks to complete. Aquino, Estrada and four other candidates have called for a parallel manual count to allay fears that the new system might fail. The elections commission rejected the proposal Thursday.
