China calls for US economic talks to continue under Obama
AFP - Wednesday, November 19
BEIJING (AFP) - - China said Tuesday it hoped regular high-level economic talks with the United States will continue under president-elect Barack Obama, describing them as an important way to maintain good relations.
"We hope the two countries will continue to maintain this mechanism, so as to discuss those comprehensive long-term strategic issues," foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang told reporters in Beijing.
"I don't know how (the Obama administration) will consider this issue. But I believe, whatever party rules the US government, it's of great importance to maintain sound relations with China."
The Strategic Economic Dialogue was initiated two years ago by US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and is now the highest-level regular forum for discussion of economic issues between the two nations.
The global financial crisis has increased the saliency of Sino-US economic ties, with Chinese President Hu Jintao attending a summit of 20 major economies in Washington over the weekend.
Qin made the remarks shortly after a member of George W. Bush's outgoing administration, Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, described the dialogue as a success but said she did not know if it would go on.
"The value of this Strategic Economic Dialogue is self-evident, so we hope that the next administration will continue it," Chao told reporters in Beijing in response to a question about whether the talks would continue under Obama.
Chao said the next round of discussions would be held in Beijing on December 4 and 5.
Chao, who is in China for a work safety forum, said she did not know yet if Obama would send a representative to the December talks, which will be the fifth session of the dialogue.
"We may be offered (an Obama representative). They have so many transitional issues they've got to deal with," she said.
Qin pointed out that Obama had spoken of the importance of maintaining good relations during a phone call with Hu on November 8 that covered issues such as co-operation on the global financial crisis.
Ting Wai, an international relations scholar at Hong Kong Baptist University, said he was certain the dialogue would continue when Obama takes over.
"It's a dialogue channel at a very high level enabling leaders almost at the top to regularly exchange opinions on economic and financial issues," Ting said.
"Economic exchanges, especially trade and investment, between China and the United States have been huge and therefore there are a lot of problems.
"It is impossible for the (strategic dialogue) not to be continued just because of the change of the US president."
Last time the Strategic Economic Dialogue dialogue convened, in the United States in June, Treasury chief Paulson had face-to-face meetings with Vice Premier Wang Qishan, a key economic policy maker.
A major issue that has emerged at every meeting so far has been the Chinese currency, believed by the United States to be undervalued and giving Chinese exporters an unfair advantage.
