Malkin takes ice hockey puck to the face, sees scoring streak end
AFP - 1 hour 40 minutes ago
PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AFP) - - National Hockey League scoring leader Evgeni Malkin of Russia took a puck in the face and had his 13-game scoring streak snapped in a 2-1 Pittsburgh loss to Minnesota.
The 22-year-old Penguins center left the game in the second period after being struck in the face with a puck struck off the stick of teammate Rob Scuderi.
Malkin was bleeding from the mouth as he skated off the ice but after treatment came back for the third period of what turned out to be a shooutout loss to the Wild.
Malkin had six goals and 21 assists during his scoring streak and leads the NHL with seven goals and a league-best 23 assists in 18 games this season.
Malkin, taken second in the 2004 NHL Draft and the Calder Trophy winner as a rookie scored 47 goals and 106 points for the Penguins last season as they reached the Stanley Cup finals.
Minnesota goaltender Niklas Backstrom stopped 24 shots as the Wild won for the fourth time in five games.
