Taiwan stocks fall
AP - 2 hours 32 minutes ago
TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan shares fell sharply Tuesday, weighed down by a poor overnight performance on Wall Street, and weakness on neighboring Asian bourses.
The weighted price index of the Taiwan Stock Exchange fell 134.62 points, or 3.03 percent, to close at 4,305.18.
Airline shares were among the losers, despite President Ma Ying-jeou's comments to a business gathering Tuesday morning that the island would probably begin direct flights to China in about six months.
The comments echoed an agreement reached between the sides during a Taipei visit earlier this month by senior Chinese envoy Chen Yinlin.
China Airlines, Taiwan's biggest carrier, fell 4.54 percent to New Taiwan dollars 7.36. No. 2 carrier Eva Airways dropped 5.00 percent to NT$7.41.
