Colosseum protest against culture budget cuts
ROME (AFP) - – Demonstrators on Saturday linked arms around the Colosseum in Rome in protest at cuts to the culture budget and poor maintenance of the country's ancient monuments.
Protesters surrounded the ancient building for the "Let's Hug Culture" movement that also saw protesters gather at sites including the prehistoric stones in the Basilicata region.
"The battle for culture is a battle for freedom," said Susanna Camusso, head of Italy's biggest union CGIL, which helped organise the event.
"The government's policy is that of cutting away at the tools that allow us to have our own opinion. Defending culture is saying we want a free, democratic country in which it's possible to take part," she said.
The demonstration was the latest in a protest movement that has been simmering in Italy since last summer when the government agreed to cut culture budgets by 280 million euros (371 million dollars) over a three year period.
"This is a different Italy, one that defends the Constitution, work and the dignity of women," Camusso said referring to the protesters.
Her comments came after complaints from business leaders that the government has been neglecting Italy's problems due to an obsession with a sex scandal involving Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and an underage prostitute.
