The incidents came as former interior minister Habib al-Adly, who controlled the hated security police, went on trial in Cairo on corruption charges, the first involving a member of ousted president Hosni Mubarak's government. Around 2,500 protesters stormed the state security building in Cairo's Nasr City "grabbing official documents before officials burn or shred them," a security official told AFP. Hundreds more tried to barge their way into another state security building in the Cairo suburb of Sheikh Zayed, where guards inside fired into the air to try to disperse the crowd. "We could see police inside the building burning the papers," said one witness. "The windows were open and loads of papers were flying out," another told AFP by telephone. The army, which has been maintaining security since police disappeared from the streets in anti-government protests last month, blocked protesters from getting inside the building. Protesters surged into the state security headquarters in the northwestern city of Mersa Matrouh, gathering up thousands of documents before setting the building on fire. Residents of the coastal resort then sat at nearby cafes leafing through the documents for evidence of human rights abuses as smoke billowed from the headquarters nearby, a witness told AFP. Demonstrators also stormed state security offices in the Nile Delta city of Zagazig and in Fayum south of Cairo, the security official said. On Friday, hundreds massed outside the local state security headquarters in Egypt's second city Alexandria, hurling Molotov cocktails and burning police cars. Some managed to get inside the building, and security officials inside fired gunshots before troops intervened. Protesters who brought about Mubarak's ouster in February have called for the abolition of the State Security Investigations, or SSI, which counts at least 100,000 employees and a large network of informants, a security official told AFP. On Friday, Egypt's newly appointed Prime Minister Essam Sharaf vowed to reform the dreaded security apparatus as he addressed thousands of people in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the focal point of protests that toppled Mubarak. "I pray that Egypt will be a free country and that its security apparatus will serve the citizens," Sharaf said, as thousands chanted "the people want the end of the state security." Mubarak resigned on February 11, handing power to a military council that has vowed to pave the way to a free and democratic system, pledging to bring to justice all those found guilty of abuse. Activists say that while once torture was reserved for political prisoners and terrorism suspects, it became widely practised even on petty criminal suspects. The most recent case to have dominated headlines and sparked demonstrations was of Khaled Said, a 28-year-old man beaten to death by two undercover police officers on an Alexandria street in June. Other notorious cases include Emad el-Kabir, who was sodomised with a stick in a police station in 2007, with images of the torture recorded on a mobile phone and broadcast on the Internet. A total of seven police officers have been sentenced for torture or inhumane treatment since 2006, but no one from the State Security Investigations, which monitors political dissent, has ever been prosecuted for torture.
