The Islamic nation has refused to nullify votes in its June 12 polls re-electing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad despite charges of voter fraud. Meeting in Trieste, Italy, the Group of Eight in a draft statement "deplore[d] post-electoral violence and expressed solidarity with "those who have suffered repression while peacefully demonstrating." But the same day, Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khatami, a top cleric, warned demonstrators that they face the severest punishments under Islamic law since they are "mohareb" or one who wages war against God, according to state-run Press TV. "Rioters and those who mastermind the unrest must know the Iranian nation will not give in to pressure and accept the nullification of the election results," Khatami said. "I ask the Judiciary to firmly deal with these people and set an example for everyone." Ahmadinejad was said to have received 63 percent of the vote in Iran's June 12 election, while main opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, took 34 percent. Only Iran's 10th election since the 1979 revolution, there have been massive rallies by pro and anti-government protesters since then, and serious accusations against Western nations, specifically France, London and the United States, of meddling. The Guardian Council, the body that supervises elections and approves results, had announced last Tuesday that it would recount some votes, but Mousavi, had rejected the offer of a recount and asked for new elections. Early this week, the Council declared all votes valid, even as violent protests continued. At least 17 protesters have reportedly died during the rallies. And the death of one woman, Neda Agha Soltan - in graphic video widely circulated worldwide - has become a symbol of what may be one of the most powerful challenges against the Islamic nation's rulers since the revolution. Khatami has said Neda's death was planned by "saboteurs," and that American and European news outlets had used her death as part of their propaganda. Seventy academics who met with Mousavi, a 67-year-old former prime minister who ran on a pledge to mend Tehran's relations with the international community, have reportedly been arrested. Mousavi also said in his website on Friday the head of his information committee, Abolfazl Fateh, has been barred from leaving for a scheduled trip to the United Kingdom. U.S. President Barack Obama has taken pains not to appear to be "meddling" in Iran's internal politics, remaining firmly cautious inspite of rebukes from critics that his response to the situation has been weak. Obama early this week made his strongest statement on Iran, saying the world is "appalled and outraged by the threats, the beatings, and imprisonments... unjust actions." But he also insisted, "The Iranian people are trying to have a debate about their future. Some in Iran -- some in the Iranian government, in particular, are trying to avoid that debate by accusing the United States and others in the West of instigating protests over the election. These accusations are patently false." Ahmadinejad, responding to the comments, said Obama had "fallen into the trap" of using the rhetoric of former President George W. Bush, who had pursued a hardline approach against the Islamic republic.
