EU launches aid mission over Italy's migrant crisis
BRUSSELS (AFP) - – The European Union said Saturday it will launch an aid mission to help Italy process the scores of illegal migrants from North Africa that recently reached the Mediterranean country.
EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem said the EU border agency Frontex's mission would officially be deployed Sunday to assist the Italian authorities in managing the inflow of migrants and in particular the arrivals from Tunisia on the island of Lampedusa.
"In the framework of the Hermes mission, experts from participating member states will be deployed, together with aerial and naval means, to assist the Italian authorities.
"Human and technical resources could be increased according to future needs," she said.
EU officials said the mission would comprise about 30 people, a plane and several ships.
In all, about 10 countries have agreed to join.
"The mission is part of a broader framework of measures put in place by the European Commission to manage these exceptional migratory flows, including cooperation with Tunisian authorities, identification of financial emergency envelopes and assistance by the European Police Office (Europol)," said Malmstroem.
Thanking the EU commissioner Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said he was satisfied with the EU decision, ANSA news agency reported.
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said he hoped "the new governments in the immigrants' country of origin will act to stop this phenomenon, so the situation can get back to normal".
"We are anxiously following what is happening," he added.
On the basis of a plan agreed with the Italian authorities Frontex experts will assist in debriefing and interviewing migrants with special attention given to identifying those who may be in need of international protection.
Frontex will also give aerial and naval support for border surveillance.
Malmstroem said the mission which will patrol in Italian and international but not Tunisian waters was being launched four days after receiving an official request from the Italian authorities.
"This is a clear signal of European solidarity between member states and a concrete proof of the European Commission's commitment to assist Italy in this difficult situation," she said.
The past week has seen a sharp spike in migrants attempting to make it into the European Union from Tunisia, with some 5,000 brought to the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa after being intercepted by coastguards.
The wave of immigration comes around a month after a revolution in Tunisia that unseated a 23-year regime but which has left the North African country wracked by social and economic tensions.
Italy had declared an emergency and appealed for European help.
Malmstroem welcomed upcoming talks Monday of EU foreign ministers about comprehensive EU assistance to Tunisia.
Democracy, economic and social development is what the Tunisian people are demanding, and would also decrease irregular immigration, she said.
