Baddeley leads, Couples lurks at Riviera golf open
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - – Australia's Aaron Baddeley fired a four-under par 67 to take a one-shot lead at the PGA Northern Trust Open over veteran Fred Couples and Kevin Na.
Baddeley's five birdies on Saturday included three straight from the eighth hole. He gave one shot back with a bogey at the par-five 11th, but held steady the rest of the way despite capricious weather at Riviera Country Club for a 54-hole total of 10-under 203.
Couples, who held a two-shot lead after 36 holes on a course where he has made 29 US PGA Tour starts and won twice, again defied his aching back to post a one-under 70.
Na, who grew up in Southern California after his family moved here from South Korea, is seeking a first career win. He carded a 67 to share second with Couples, the US captain for this year's Presidents Cup, on 204.
Couples wasn't the only veteran in the mix.
Fiji's Vijay Singh, three days shy of his 48th birthday, carded a 67 for 205 to put himself in position to challenge for his first US tour victory since 2008.
Baddeley had a long day, returning to complete the last four holes of his second round after darkness halted play on Friday.
He birdied the last of those to bolster his confidence and was looking forward to the final round, in which he'll play alongside the sentimental favorite Couples.
"I'm looking forward to it," said Baddeley, whose two US tour titles came in 2006 and 2007. Baddeley believes his game has progressed since his return to his old swing coach, Dale Lynch.
"It's been a little bit of time since I've been in this position so I'm excited for the challenge," he said.
Baddeley made an eight-foot birdie putt at the eighth, then drained a 30-footer at the ninth. He nabbed another birdie at the 315-yard par-four 10th when he drove the front edge of the green.
By the time he played 11, heavy rain was sweeping across the course, although Baddeley said his bogey from the trees there was more due to "poor concentration" than the sudden shift in conditions.
"I was listening to these guys whisper, and I should have backed off," he said. "That was more the reason for the bad shot."
Ahead of him, Na's run of three birdies from the ninth hole came to a close at the 12th, where his tee shot hit a tree and bounced into an adjoining fairway.
Given how poor the shot was, and the pelting rain, Na was relieved to escape relatively lightly.
"That was the worst (weather) conditions," he said. "I only dropped a shot for that bad of a shot, so it was OK."
Couples, who has battled back problems for years, did his best to stay limber in the cold and wet.
He said his back wasn't too bad, but after a birdie at the first hole -- where he just missed his a 17-foot eagle putt -- he managed just one more birdie at 11 with a bogey at the 10th.
"Tough day," Couples said. "You know, I hung in there. I didn't hit the ball exceptionally well but I hit it solid ... I just didn't make enough birdies.
"Tomorrow I have to come out and fight and see what happens."
Singh's round included six birdies and if he didn't hit the ball as well as he would have liked, he couldn't complain about his putting.
"I tell you what, I had one of the best putting rounds I've had for a long, long time," said Singh, who capped his round with a 28-foot birdie putt at 18. He also rolled in a 28-footer at 16 and drained a 60-footer at the par-four 13th.
"I didn't hit the ball like my score reflected, but I putted and I scored really well," he said.
Singh, who tied for third at the Phoenix Open earlier this month, was pleased to be in contention, even if he's not sure just what to expect from his game.
"I'm really fired up for tomorrow," he said. "I'm in a good position to win tomorrow, so we'll see what happens."
