Los Angeles, CA, US (CNS) - Led by the surprising death of Michael Jackson, 2009 was an unforgettable year filled with shocks, scandals, and surprises. After surveying over a hundred CNS readers, these are the news stories that summed up the year in Entertainment.
The Death of Michael Jackson: Jackson was set to be the comeback story of the year after selling out 50 dates at London's O2 Arena. But on June 25th, 2009, Jackson suffered a cardiac arrest in his Los Angeles home. Soon, Jackson was the sole story on every news channel and media outlet. His death heralded in countless controversial news stories and triggered an outpouring of grief among music fans, who cleared out stores of his albums and DVD's. His public memorial service alone earned nearly a billion people worldwide and he earned the biggest concert film of all-time with "This Is It."
Chris Brown and Rihanna's Assault Incident: The R&B Princess & Prince were a match made at the MTV Video Music Awards, before things took a turn for the worst one night in February. Soon, reports of assault and a photo of a battered and bruised Rihanna was the talk of a nation. The two stars have since then made musical comebacks, while the story has caused a worldwide discussion on domestic abuse and violence.
Tiger Woods Scandal: One night in November, Tiger Woods was involved in a "car accident" and his world came crumbling down. Over a dozen women claim to have had extra-martial affairs with the Pro Golf star, who was recently voted the Athlete of the Decade, in a story that only continues to reveal more shocking details.
Taylor Swift and Kanye West: "I'ma let you finish," said West, grabbing the mic out of Best Female Video winner Swift's hands. It was the speech interruption that launched a million tweets. The camera hadn't cut away back to a disappointed-looking Swift before Kanye had earned an army of haters and Team Swift supporters. He's since apologized but cancelled a tour with Lady Gaga, while Swift went on to sell-out arenas and sell over a million more records.
Jon and Kate Gosselin: Minus Kate, plus a whole lot of tabloid cover stories and "Entertainment Tonight" airtime. The relentless assault on entertainment news viewers with details on the latest of TLC stars Jon and Kate Gosselin's divorce made it, involuntarily, one of the biggest stories of the year.
Susan Boyle: Susan Boyle earned the most-watched video on YouTube of 2009 with over 120 million views of her performance of "I Dreamed A Dream" on "America's Got Talent" and the biggest success story of the year. Viewers laughed and sobbed at their first glimpse of the 48-year-old Scottish singer, who's already sold millions of her just-released debut album.
Britney Spears: "Britney's official comeback," "Britney Spears being healthy and breaking records," and "Britney Spears acting normal for a whole year" were just some of the variations readers chose to vote Britney Spears as one of the biggest celebrity news stories of the year. Spears earned great reviews for her sell-out tour, but seeing a happy, healthy Britney is as exciting for readers as her Big Top performances, cementing the "Circus" star as the official comeback queen.
Celebrity Deaths: Natasha Richardson, Farrah Fawcett, Patrick Swayze, Ed McMahon, and DJ AM were just some of the names named as the celebrity deaths that left readers shocked and touched.
Oprah Announces Show Ending: Twenty-five is the perfect number, Oprah Winfrey said when she announced that she would bow out of her talk show after twenty-five years. Set to end in 2011, the groundbreaking television star will move on to other aspects of her O empire, but leaves millions with an extra open hour a day.
Adam Lambert: Adam Lambert was already making headlines as a finalist on "American Idol." But his performance on the "American Music Awards" caused a national frenzy and immediate television backlash not seen since Janet Jackson's Super Bowl incident. In retrospect, the performance was probably as offensive as a prime-time showing of "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry," but it put the "For Your Entertainment" singer on the fast-track to shed his "Idol" roots and earned him comparisons to Elvis Presley and Madonna.
