Lebanon's Hariri on landmark visit to Syria

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri began a landmark visit to his country's former powerbroker Syria on Saturday, on a two-day mission aimed at rebuilding ties between the two Arab neighbours.
DAMASCUS (AFP) - – Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri began a landmark visit to his country's former powerbroker Syria on Saturday, on a two-day mission aimed at rebuilding ties between the two Arab neighbours.
It was Hariri's first trip to Damascus since taking over as premier last month and since the 2005 assassination of his father, ex-prime minister Rafiq Hariri -- a killing that he and his US-backed allies in Beirut blamed on Syria.
Syria's President Bashar al-Assad gave Hariri a warm welcome as he arrived at the capital's Tishrin palace, where the two young leaders shook hands and embraced before going into one-on-one talks ahead of an official dinner.
"This visit will open up a new phase in relations between the two countries," a press official from Hariri's office told AFP.
A Syrian analyst, on condition of anonymity, played up the importance of the visit, saying it was "aimed at bringing back on track relations between Syria and Lebanon."
Syrian political analyst Ibrahim Darraji agreed.
"The visit is the first attempt to break the ice after years of tense relations," he told AFP, adding that it also showed that Hariri and Assad have "overcome personal" differences.
The trip to Syria is Hariri's first since the massive bombing on the Beirut seafront that killed his billionaire father and five-time former premier as well as 22 other people nearly five years ago.
The 39-year-old Saad Hariri and his allies have in the past pointed an accusing finger at Syria and also blamed Damascus for a string of political killings in Lebanon.
The international community also widely blamed the murder on Syria.
Damascus has denied any involvement in Rafiq Hariri's murder, but faced with mounting pressure it withdrew its troops from Lebanon in April 2005, two months after the murder, ending 29 years of domination.
A UN inquiry said it had evidence that Syrian and Lebanese intelligence services at the time were linked to the killing, but no charges have been brought.
Earlier this month, a Syrian court asked 25 prominent Lebanese figures, including individuals close to Saad Hariri, to appear for questioning over the murder.
But Hariri told the Lebanese parliament on December 8 that he wants to forge "brotherly ties" with Damascus.
"The government wants to raise brotherly ties between Lebanon and Syria to a level in line with the two countries' historical ties and mutual interest," Hariri said before his cabinet received parliament's vote of confidence.
In November, Hariri's 30-member cabinet adopted a policy statement despite reservations from his Christian allies on the arsenal held by the Syria- and Iran-backed Shiite party Hezbollah.
Hariri's US- and Western-backed coalition defeated a Hezbollah-led alliance in a general election on June 7.
Saturday's visit is the latest sign of a thaw in decades of turbulent relations between Lebanon and Syria, which in October 2008 set up diplomatic ties for the first time since independence from France more than 60 years ago.
Damascus opened its first embassy in Lebanon just under a year ago, and Beirut sent an ambassador to Syria in March.
Hariri's landmark trip also comes as Washington seeks to improve relations with Syria, and a day after Lebanese President Michel Sleiman visited Damascus following a trip to Washington.
The number of American delegations to visit Damascus has risen sharply since President Barack Obama replaced George W. Bush in the White House, including missions to discuss security along the border between Syria and Iraq.
