In a joint press conference Friday, Bloomberg and Dr. Thomas Frieden, the newly-appointed head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the disease seemed to be no worse than seasonal incidents of influenza. People were recovering quickly, they added. Even so, Frieden said the disease seemed "to be spreading more rapidly than traditional influenza spreads," according to the New York Times. As the press conference was underway, three public schools in Queens were being scrubbed with disinfectants by masked workers. The schools were ordered closed for at least five days on Thursday. Meanwhile, a 55-year-old school vice principal was hospitalized with a life-threatening condition on Thursday. Family members on Friday said he was suffering from kidney failure, dehydration and a lung infection as a result of catching the flu. At least 50 students at one school have fallen ill with flu-like symptoms since May 6. Some 29 students at another school were reported ill, while more than 200 students at a third school have been absent Also on Friday, President Obama named Frieden to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Frieden had worked at the CDC for 12 years before becoming New York City's health commissioner.
