(AHN) - Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT), who were campaign surrogates for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) last year, on Friday praised President Barack Obama for the second time this week, saying his decision to revive military commissions was the right choice. Graham, a moderate Republican, said in a statement, "I support President Obama's decision to seek a further stay of military commission trials. Today's action will afford us the opportunity to reform the military Commission system and produce a comprehensive policy regarding present and future detainees." "Detainee policy is very complex. The President wants to collaborate with Congress to reform detainee policy and we should use this additional time to come up with a sensible national security policy regarding terror suspects. "I agree with the President and our military commanders that now is the time to start over and strengthen our detention policies. I applaud the President's actions," he added. Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with Democrats but was a prime time speaker at the GOP National Convention last year, said in a statement he is "very pleased" that Obama deeed tribunals the "proper forum to try prisoners captured on the battlefield in the war against those who attacked America." "By taking this action, President Obama has reinforced that we are at war, and that the laws of war should apply to these prisoners," he added. Both senators had issued a joint statement earlier this week lauding the President's decision to block the release of photos showing the treatment of prisoners in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Obama administration last month said it would release photos that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) had been trying to have the Bush administation make public under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The President said "the most direct consequence of releasing them [the photos] would be to further inflame anti-American opinion and to put our troops in greater danger." On Friday, he is expected to se of military tribunals on Guantanamo prisoners, a system implemented by his predecessor that he had criticized and halted only hours after taking office on Jan. 20. The Obama administration will revise Bush adminstration system so terror suspects will have more rights to defend themselves. Obama had issued three executive orders on his second day of office, one closing Guantanamo, another banning waterboarding, and the third ordering a review of options for handling future detainees. The orders followed a request to prosecutors the night of his inauguration for a 120-day halt to military trials of terror suspects at the prison. A military judge approved the request the next day. The executive orders also say Guantanamo must be closed by Jan. 22, 2010, and that "military commissions, perhaps with revised authorities, would remain an option." The ACLU, which had decried the President's reversal on the detainee photos as a "betrayal," has criticized the revival of the tribunals. "The military commissions are built on unconstitutional premises and designed to ensure convictions, not provide fair trials. Reducing some but not all of the flaws of the tribunals so that they are 'less offensive' is not acceptable," ACLU Anthony Romero said in a statement last week.
