Rove Answers Prosecutor Questions About Attorney Dismissals

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove will be interviewed on Friday by the special prosecutor in charge of the criminal investigation on the Bush administration's controversial dismissals of nine U.S. attorneys in 2006.
Rove, who resigned from the White House in August 2007 amid controversy over the firings, will be interviewed by U.S. attorney in Connecticut Nora Dannehy, according to the Washington Post.
Dannehy had been appointed last October by then-Attorney General Michael Mukasey to "determine whether any prosecutable offense was committed with regard to the removal of a U.S. Attorney or the testimony of any witness related to the U.S. Attorney removals."
Critics of the Bush administration had said the firings, which happened under the leadership of former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, were politically-motivated and part of a process to neutralize opposition in government.
The appointment was in response to a special report by the Justice Department Inspector General Glenn Fine and Office of Professional Responsibility Director H. Marshall Jarrett that there was "significant evidence that political partisan considerations were an important factor" in the removal of the nine attorneys."
They added that the removal of David Iglesias, the U.S. Attorney for New Mexico, was preceded by complaints from Republicans to the White House about the federal prosecutor's failure to charge Democrats with voter fraud. The report cited an e-mail message from former New Mexico state senator Mickey Barnett to Rove.
They also said Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO) had inappropriately sought the dismissal of Todd Graves, the former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri. Bond reportedly retaliated because Graves refused to intervene in a disagreement between the senator's office and the office of his brother, Rep. Sam Graves (R-MO).
The report did not accuse Justice Department officials of violating any criminal statute because evidence was not complete.
"There were gaps in the investigation," the report said, "because of the refusal of certain key witnesses to be interviewed, including former White House officials Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, and William Kelley; former Department White House Liaison Monica Goodling; and Senator Pete Domenici and his chief of staff Steve Bell. In addition, the White House declined to provide internal documents relating to the removals of the U.S. Attorneys."
Dannehy has reportedly subpoenaed records of former New Mexico Sen. Pete Domenici, who allegedly was one of several Republicans who complained about Iglesias.
Congress has also been investigating the firings, filing a lawsuit last March asking the courts to enforce subpoenas sent to former Bush aides who refused to testify or provide documents about the dismissal.
It is believed to be the first suit of its kind from Congress against the executive branch.
A year after the lawsuit, House Judiciary Committee chair John Conyers (D-MI) announced that he had reached an agreement with Rove and Miers, who both previously fought off subpoenas by invoking executive privilege.
