Few Americans had ever heard of King George VI -- the royal who led Britain into World War II and the father of current monarch Queen Elizabeth -- before Colin Firth brought him to life in "King's Speech" as a shy man with a crippling stutter. New version of Justin Bieber film to hit theaters LOS ANGELES - In an unprecedented move, Paramount's Insurge Pictures will release an updated director's fan cut of "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" in a one-week exclusive run, beginning February 25. Director Jon M. Chu's updated "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never Director's Fan Cut" will play only in 3D runs in the U.S. and Canada, replacing the original version. There will be 40 minutes of new footage. "Unknown" claims holiday box office crown LOS ANGELES - Thriller "Unknown" found plenty of friends over the four-day, President's Day holiday weekend in the United States, as it claimed the top spot on box office charts during a slow period in movie theaters. "Unknown," starring Liam Neeson as a man who must reclaim his identity after finding it stolen when he awakens from a coma, raked in $25.6 million over the four days starting on Friday, according to studio estimates released on Monday. Oscar telecast nixing montages, elaborate tributes LOS ANGELES - As preparations for next Sunday's Academy Awards move into high gear, the show's producers have booted a number of familiar elements. Gone will be the movie montages -- like last year's salute to horror movies -- that often contribute to the broadcast's unwieldy running time. While there will be film clips from the ten best picture nominees and brief filmed introductions to different segments of the show, "Within the body of the show, we are not doing any film montage sequences," said Bruce Cohen, who will produce with Don Mischer. Music exec slams Grammys in full-page NY Times ad NEW YORK - A veteran music executive has lambasted the Grammy Awards as "a series of hypocrisies and contradictions," in a full-page New York Times advertisement that ran a week after last Sunday's annual ceremony. Steve Stoute's open letter to Grammy organizers ripped the organization and its 12,000-odd voters for snubbing Eminem and Justin Bieber at this year's ceremony, as well as Eminem and Kanye West at past events. Cirque du Soleil puts record $57 million in Russian show MOSCOW - Canadian circus company Cirque du Soleil will invest a record $57 million in a new show in Moscow next year to test the ground before launching a permanent show in Russia by 2015, its president said on Monday. "Zarkana" is Cirque du Soleil's first new show in Russia and will be the most expensive non-permanent show the company has ever made to date, Daniel Lamarre told reporters. "Xena" heroine dusts off sandals for "Spartacus" By Lesley Goldberg LOS ANGELES - Lucy Lawless doesn't mind being typecast. Acclaimed Iranian film triumphs in Berlin BERLIN - Iranian drama "Nader and Simin: A Separation" won the Golden Bear for best picture at the Berlin film festival on Saturday, while its ensemble cast also picked up the best actor and actress prizes on a triumphant night. Director Asghar Farhadi's portrayal of a marriage in crisis was firm favorite for the coveted award, and its victory was the first for an Iranian picture, Berlin organizers said. Lady Gaga breaks iTunes records, says on "drunk diet" LOS ANGELES - Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" has become the fastest-selling single ever on Apple's iTunes store worldwide, racking up more than one million downloads in five days, Apple said on Friday. Apple said the song -- a Madonna-influenced dance track that the 24 year-old singer performed after "hatching" from a giant egg at the Grammy Awards -- had hit the No. 1 spot on iTunes in 23 countries. Holy smokes Batman! Oscar voters go mainstream LOS ANGELES - If any of the frontrunners for the best film Oscar win the world's top movie award in nine days, the idea that voters are out of touch with mainstream movie fans may be over after two years of trying. For that, Oscar owes a big "thank you" to Batman and Clint Eastwood. Or, to director Christopher Nolan and his 2008 Batman movie "The Dark Knight," and Eastwood with his feature "Gran Torino," neither of which was even nominated for the best film of 2008 despite being popular hits.
