Apple falls on iPad launch delay speculation
TAIPEI/NEW YORK - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> shares fell 2.4 percent after a brokerage firm said the next version of its iPad tablet computer will be delayed as maker Hon Hai <2317.T> faces production bottlenecks due to the device's new design. Taiwanese brokerage Yuanta Securities said in a note the next version of iPad would come out two months later than last the first version, which launched in April last year.
Amazon takes aim at Netflix, roll out streaming video service
NEW YORK - Amazon.com <AMZN.O> rolled out a streaming TV and movie service for its prime customers, taking a direct shot at fast growing rival Netflix. Amazon announced on Tuesday that its prime customers, who pay $79 a year for free two-day shipping, can choose among 5,000 TV shows and movies such as "Syriana," "Doctor Who: Season 4," and "Analyze This" to stream through computers and devices such as Roku.
HP results seen solid as Apotheker's vision awaited
SAN FRANCISCO - Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N> should reaffirm good corporate technology spending trends when it reports results, as investors wait to hear more about new CEO Leo Apotheker's vision for the future. On Tuesday, the world's largest technology company by revenue is expected to report strong demand for networking equipment, servers and storage, but relatively lackluster sales of low-margin personal computers due to weak consumer spending.
Chinese workers appeal to Apple over health worries
SUZHOU, China - Chinese workers at a factory making touch screens on contract for Apple <AAPL.O> have urged the U.S. company to help address their grievances over a chemical poisoning they said could still harm their health. Wintek <2384.TW>, the Taiwanese company that owns the factory in east China's Suzhou industrial park, has said it used hexyl hydride, also called n-hexane, from May 2008 to August 2009, but stopped after discovering it was making workers ill.
Website a window into John F. Kennedy's Oval Office
BOSTON - Any history buff with a computer and Internet connection now has a chance to walk in John F. Kennedy's shoes -- or at least sit, virtually, at the 35th President's Oval Office desk. The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston has launched "The President's Desk," an interactive website that that seats users at Kennedy's desk and displays multimedia presentations of aspects of his life and administration.
Alibaba's shares fall 9 percent, company faces revamp
HONG KONG - Shares of Alibaba.com <1688.HK> tumbled as much as 10 percent after an internal probe prompted resignations of its top executives and forced the company to clean up a vendor mess that defrauded buyers. China's biggest e-commerce company, founded by billionaire and former school teacher Jack Ma, now faces the challenge of coping with the abrupt replacement of its CEO and COO and with revamping its payment and credit-ranking system to prevent the fraud it announced on Monday.
French site Ejustice.fr charges Google with fresh abuse
BRUSSELS - Google <GOOG.O> has continued to thwart rivals despite complaints of anticompetitive behavior filed with EU antitrust regulators last year, the creator of French legal search engine Ejustice.fr said on Tuesday. The French company is one of three online search engines that have already accused the world's No. 1 in web search of abusing its dominant position by demoting rival sites in results and giving preference to its own services.
Android, video games dominate mobile confab
BARCELONA, Spain - The 2011 instellment of Mobile World Congress, which gathered 60,000 professionals from 200 countries, served as the official coming-out party for the next generation of Google Android smartphones and tablets. Android had a massive, two-floor booth packed with all the new smartphones and tablets shipping in the coming months running off the various Android platforms, including Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play phone, which operates on Gingerbread, and LG's Optimus Pad tablet, which is powered by Honeycomb.
Libya cuts off Internet service: network monitor
LOS ANGELES - Internet service has been cut off in Libya for a second consecutive day as protesters step up demonstrations against longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi, a U.S. company that monitors Internet traffic said on Saturday. Massachusetts-based Arbor Networks said data collected from 30 Internet providers around the world showed that online traffic in and out of Libya was disconnected abruptly at 7:15 p.m. EST on Friday after two partial interruptions earlier that day.
Spotify eyes $100 million funding from DST: report
MOSCOW - Internet music service Spotify is in the process of closing at least $100 million financing led by venture firm DST, according to popular technology blog TechCrunch. The deal would value the Swedish start-up at around $1 billion, TechCrunch said citing unnamed sources, and add to DST's portfolio of social networking companies including Facebook, the world's No. 1 social network; Zynga; and Groupon.
