Apple sues Motorola, further escalating cellphone wars

NEW YORK - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> sued rival Motorola Inc <MOT.N>, claiming the Droid smartphone maker infringes on three iPhone patents. Cupertino, California-based Apple says Motorola is purposefully using its touchscreen software, as well as other display technologies.

DNA barcoding aims to protect species, food

TORONTO - Call it a DNA digital Dewey Decimal System for all life on Earth. Every species, from extinct to thriving, is set to get its own DNA barcode in an attempt to better track the ones that are endangered, as well as those being shipped across international borders as food or consumer products.

Take-Two Interactive's CEO stepping down, shares rise

NEW YORK - Take-Two Interactive Software Inc <TTWO.O>, the video game publisher best known for "Grand Theft Auto," said Chief Executive Ben Feder will step down and be replaced by Strauss Zelnick, the company's executive chairman. Shares jumped more than 5 percent after the announcement, an increase that one analyst attributed to speculation that the management change could set the stage for an acquisition of Take-Two. Take-Two's shares closed up 4.7 percent, or 48 cents, at $10.67 on Nasdaq.

Turkey lifts its ban on YouTube: agency

ISTANBUL - Turkey has lifted its ban on video-sharing website YouTube as material deemed insulting to Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk has been removed, Turkish state-run news agency Anatolian reported Saturday. Ankara's general attorney ruled the site, blocked since May 2008, should be now freely accessible to Turkish users.

Cellphone market slowing but smartphones still boom

HELSINKI - Cellphone market growth slowed slightly in the September quarter due to worries over economic growth and component shortages, and the market growth would slow further in the current quarter, researchers said on Friday. The phones market -- the largest volume electronics industry -- has surged this year from a slump in 2009 when the recession hit consumer spending on the latest gadgets around the world.

IBM in talks to buy Fortinet: report

NEW YORK - International Business Machines Corp <IBM.N> is in advanced talks to buy network security provider Fortinet Inc <FTNT.O>, Bloomberg reported on Friday. Morgan Stanley <MS.N> is advising Fortinet, the news agency said, citing unnamed sources.

Video games shares looking for a catalyst

SAN FRANCISCO - U.S. video game publishers will provide a snapshot of consumer sentiment as the critical holiday season nears, with investors awaiting that elusive catalyst to shake the industry out of its doldrums. Shares of Activision Blizzard Inc <ATVI.O> , Electronic Arts Inc <ERTS.O> and THQ Inc <THQI.O> -- which report quarterly results starting next week -- have underperformed the market this year, as sales of traditional hardware and software in the $60 billion industry continue to slump.

Regulator taking on cyberbullying in schools

WASHINGTON - Schools receiving subsidies for Internet service will have to teach students about cyberbullying and the responsible use of social networking sites, the U.S. telecommunications regulator said on Friday. Cyberbullying happens when teens use the Internet, mobile phones, or other devices to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person, and it is a problem for nearly half of all U.S. teens, according to the National Crime Prevention Council.

India says RIM assures final Messenger solution by end-January

NEW DELHI - India said on Friday Research In Motion <RIM.TO> has set up an interim arrangement for lawful interception of BlackBerry Messenger services and has assured to provide a final solution by end-January, and a government source said talks are still on over access to corporate emails. India, among several countries to express concerns BlackBerry services could be used to stir political or social instability, had threatened RIM with a ban if denied access to its highly-secure Messenger and corporate email communications.

Facebook and Twitter say social is the new normal

BOSTON - The social networking phenomenon has nowhere to go but up as computer use becomes more mobile, according to leading figures in the development of the popular sites Facebook and Twitter. "Two to five years from now, the whole question of what other social networks you use will be moot, because it will all be social," Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook, said in Boston on Thursday.
