"Saw 3D" makes the cut at Halloween box office
LOS ANGELES - The "Saw" horror franchise is not as sharp as it used to be, but the seventh and final entry in the annual Halloween series managed to take the top spot at the weekend box office in North America, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday. "Saw 3D" earned $24.2 million during the three days beginning on Friday, in line with muted expectations, but still the series' third-lowest opening.
Filmmaker Hickenlooper dies in Denver at 47
LOS ANGELES - Filmmaker George Hickenlooper has died at age 47, just before the premiere of his new film "Casino Jack" at the Starz Denver Film Festival, the Denver Post newspaper reported on Saturday. "We are devastated," John Hickenlooper, his cousin and the mayor of Denver, said in a statement. "His passion for life, zeal for people and unquenchable curiosity enriched everyone who had the fortune to know him."
Language no barrier for bilingual rapper Pitbull
MIAMI - During an early afternoon in Miami in January, over drinks with two local radio program directors, the conversation turned to rapper Pitbull. "He should come over and join us," said one, and impulsively picked up his cell phone and dialed. No more than 20 minutes later, there was Armando Christian Perez, aka Pitbull -- sans entourage or management -- chilling over martinis in a nearly empty restaurant overlooking Biscayne Bay.
Algerian independence film headlines Doha festival
DOHA - Stars including Salma Hayek, Freida Pinto and Kevin Spacey descended on Qatar this week for the second annual Doha Tribeca Film Festival, the Middle East branch of the celebrated New York event. Headlining the festival is French-Algerian director Rachid Bouchareb's action-thriller "Outside the Law," set against the backdrop of the Algerian struggle for independence from France after World War Two. The film set off protests at Cannes where it was screened earlier this year.
Russell Brand gets namesake bullock from animal group
NEW DELHI - Actor and long-time animal rights defender Russell Brand and wife singer Katy Perry received an unusual wedding gift on Friday from two animal rights groups in India -- a bullock named after Brand. The two were married at an exclusive resort in Rajasthan last week.
Jim Loach film debut follows in father's footsteps
ROME - Jim Loach made his debut as a film-maker in Rome Saturday, following in his father Ken's footsteps with the grim, real-life story of thousands of children deported from Britain to Australia until 1970. "Oranges and Sunshine," presented at the Rome film festival, brings to the big screen a little-known dark chapter in British history -- the shipping of tens of thousands of poor children to former colonies where many suffered abuse.
Brandy dances to new tune for girl who needs heart
LOS ANGELES - She is wowing fans on the reality TV contest "Dancing With the Stars" but behind the scenes this week, singer/actress Brandy has been in a more important competition. She is racing against time to help save the life of a teenager who needs a heart transplant. Brandy, who gained fame as chart topping R&B singer and actress on the TV show "Moesha," has been raising awareness and money for 16-year-old Jessica Harris, who suffers from a congenital heart defect. Known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the condition can be fatal.
Leading Dutch writer Harry Mulisch dies aged 83
AMSTERDAM - Dutch writer Harry Mulisch, author of 'The Assault' and 'The Discovery of Heaven', died of cancer Saturday in his Amsterdam home at the age of 83. Prime Minister Mark Rutte Sunday called his death "a loss for Dutch literature and the Netherlands" while culture minister Halbe Zijlstra said he was the last of the 'Big Three' writers with Gerard Reve and Willem Frederik Hermans, both deceased.
New Zealand law passed to keep Hobbit amid protests
WELLINGTON - The New Zealand government on Friday passed legislation clearing the way for two "Hobbit" films to be made in the country despite stiff protest by opposition lawmakers who said it was a "day of shame." The government's decision to rush through amended labor laws, part of the deal made with Warner Bros. Pictures to keep director Peter Jackson's lucrative project in his native New Zealand, has split public opinion.
Gandolfini, Leo probe troubled marriage in "Rileys"
NEW YORK - It stars Kristen Stewart but is a far cry from her teen romance "Twilight" movies, and for adult audiences heading to see "Welcome to the Rileys" when it debuts in theaters on Friday, that may be a good thing. In a moviegoing era when producers are aiming big-budget fare mostly at teen audiences, adults are finding two few dramas dealing with topics more familiar to them than falling in love with vampires. In fact, that is what drew co-stars James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo to the dark film drama.
