Asia shares mixed ahead of US Fed meeting

HONG KONG (AFP) - – Asian stocks mostly rose on Monday following robust Chinese manufacturing data, but Tokyo was subdued due to the strong yen, mixed corporate results and caution ahead of this week's US Fed meeting.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng index soared 2.41 percent, or 556.62 points, to close at 23,652.94, while Shanghai's Composite index was up 2.52 percent, or 75.19 points, at 3,054.02.
Sydney's S&P/ASX 200 closed up 0.79 percent, or 36.9 points, at 4,698.5 and Seoul's Kospi jumped 1.69 percent, or 31.79 points, to 1,914.74.
But Tokyo's Nikkei index closed down 0.52 percent, or 47.73 points, at 9,154.72.
Chinese shares were lifted by the HSBC China Manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI), which rose to 54.8 in October from 52.9 in September, as production and new orders continued to pick up.
An official survey from the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) showed that PMI rose to 54.7 last month from 53.8 in September.
"Strong manufacturing data, hot money inflows, and expectations of stronger quantitative easing measures from the Federal Reserve this week are lending strength to the (Shanghai) index," Zhang Gang of Southwest Securities told Dow Jones Newswires.
Sydney rose on the back of the Chinese data, reflecting the links between the two economies, and after strong earnings from banks last week. Miner BHP Billiton was up 0.91 percent and Rio Tinto up 0.36 percent.
However trade was quiet ahead of this week's US mid-term elections and a meeting of the Federal Reserve's Open Market Committee, analysts said.
The committee is expected to unveil measures to boost the United States' flagging recovery, however expectations of major stimulus have moderated.
Tokyo was in the doldrums as the strong yen dampened spirits and traders took a cautious view of the earnings season, with major companies such as Honda downgrading their outlooks and mixed results expected from Toyota as Japan scales back incentives for eco-friendly cars.
Data on Friday showed Japan's industrial production fell for a fourth month running in September and consumer prices slid anew.
The country's top securities firm, Nomura, dived 5.02 percent after reporting that its profits had slumped 96 percent from July to September from a year earlier.
The dollar hit a new 15-year low of 80.21 yen, edging closer to its lowest level since World War II -- the 79.75 yen hit on April 19, 1995.
The greenback quickly surged back into the 81 yen range, prompting speculation as to whether the movement was the result of Japanese intervention, a major trade or a computing error.
But by the afternoon the dollar was at 80.45 yen, compared with 80.42 yen in New York late Friday. The euro climbed to 1.3995 dollars compared with 1.3929 in New York and to 112.58 yen from 112.09.
"The dollar showed wild swings this morning... Nervous trading will continue with the dollar hovering just above 80 yen," said Hideyuki Inoue, senior dealer at Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and banking.
On Friday Wall Street ended flat after in-line news of a modest rise in US economic output and record Microsoft revenue, while Chevron's earnings largely disappointed.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.04 percent, the broader S&P 500 index lost 0.04 percent and the tech-rich Nasdaq was up a mere 0.04 points.
Oil rebounded in Asian trade, nearing 82 dollars as traders took advantage of the greenback's fresh 15-year lows, analysts said.
New York's main contract, light sweet crude for December delivery, was up 41 cents at 81.84 dollars a barrel. Brent North Sea crude for December advanced 19 cents to 83.34 dollars.
Gold closed at 1,362.00-1,363.00 US dollars an ounce in Hong Kong, up from Friday's finish of 1,339.50-1,340.50 dollars.
In other markets:
-- Singapore closed up 1.58 percent, or 49.56 points, at 3,192.18.
Fraser and Neave rose 2.56 percent to 6.40 Singapore dollars and Singapore Telecommunications gained 2.27 percent to 3.16.

-- Mumbai closed 1.61 percent, or 323.29 points, higher at 20,355.63.
ICICI Bank continued its surge after posting strong second-quarter earnings on Friday, finishing up 68.35 rupees or 5.88 percent at 1,230.
Trading was suspended for two-and-a-half hours on the exchange after a technical glitch, officials said.
