ADVERTISEMENT The former head of the Yukos oil company is already serving an eight-year sentence for fraud and tax evasion, and opposition media have in recent days asked stern questions over the authorities' rationale for a second trial. The trial had opened on March 3 with procedural hearings, and examination of the case proper officially began Tuesday with an impassioned rebuttal of the charges by Khodorkovsky. "I suggest that the trial should be stopped. I think that that would be the most beneficial outcome for the country and legally justified," he said in his first comments on proceedings at Moscow's Khamovniki district court. "I consider this trial to be senseless from the legal point of view," he added, speaking behind the bullet-proof glass of the defendants box alongside his co-defendant and former business partner Platon Lebedev. Khodorkovsky said Putin, who was Russia's president at the time of his arrest in 2003, should give evidence as a witness since the pair had met during his time as Yukos chief executive. "It is important that Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin is called as a witness because I personally gave reports to him over the questions of where the income (of Yukos) went." He and his lawyers also called for a host of other officials to testify, including Putin's right hand man, current Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, who many Khodorkovsky supporters accuse of instigating the first case. The Russian authorities insist they are treating Khodorkovsky fairly and say he is guilty of massive financial crimes stemming from the massive privatization deals of the 1990s that created a small class of super-rich "oligarchs." Supporters of Khodorkovsky say he was targeted because he had been funding opponents of Putin ahead of parliamentary elections at the time of his arrest in October 2003. Prosecutors accuse Khodorkovsky and Lebedev of embezzling millions of tons of oil worth 892.4 billion rubles (around 25 billion dollars) from three Yukos subsidiaries between 1998 and 2004. They are also accused of then laundering part of the proceeds, amounting to 487.4 billion rubles (14 billion dollars) in Russian currency and 7.5 billion dollars in hard currency. "There is no more money to take from us," said Khodorkovsky, dressed in jeans and a sweater. "As for me personally, I am sick of it all." Khodorkovsky's allies had hoped that new Russian President Dmitry Medvedev would take a more lenient line towards the jailed tycoon, after he took office promising to end "legal nihilism" in the country's court system. But Medvedev said in a weekend television interview that it was a purely legal matter. "Neither the president, not anyone else has the right to interfere in that situation," he said. Khodorkovsky's lawyers, who have said he could face up to 22 years in jail, have vehemently criticised the charges, questioning how two men could possibly embezzle an amount of crude oil equivalent to Russia's entire annual output. His defence has also accused prosecutors of effectively charging their clients twice with the same crime as the embezzlement accusation relates to the tax evasion that Khodorkovsky was jailed for in the first place. "On the embezzlement. It is about... evading taxes. Khodorkovsky was jailed for that four years ago," Russian Newsweek editor Mikhail Fishman wrote in an editorial Monday for an issue whose cover boldly read "Who needs this?" "About the laundering. This means they stole the oil and sold it for money. I'm not a lawyer but it sounds strange. A thief steals a purse, takes the money from it and puts it in a bank. Do you try him both for theft and laundering?"
