After renewing 2010 highs last week, the Korea Composite Stock Price Index <.KS11> finished down 2.07 percent at 1,721.75 points, its lowest close since July 8. Decliners nearly tripled gainers 606 to 210 in a broad-based selloff as foreign investors dumped a net 542 billion won ($458.5 million) worth of shares, their largest sale in more than two months. "Concerns about the economic slowdown are getting only deeper and it is now bleakening the corporate outlook, which was quite upbeat just until a few weeks ago," said Han Chi-whan, an analyst at Daewoo Securities. The U.S. Federal Reserve's decision this week to reinvest proceeds from maturing mortage-linked debt and its somber economic views raised investor concerns about a slowdown in the global recovery. The Bank of Korea said on Thursday exports and domestic demand remained firm and had not yet been affected by the U.S. slowdown. [ID:nTOE67B01D] POSCO, the world's No.3 steelmaker, was the biggest loser among large-cap shares, falling 3.8 percent, hit by worries that slower economic growth would crimp demand for steel used in construction, appliances and auto products. Hyundai Motor <005380.KS>, however, outperformed the market, as the yen <JPY=> rose to a 15-year high against the U.S. dollar, which will decrease the cost competitiveness of its Japanese rivals in overseas markets. "A firmer yen will help Hyundai further increase its market share, while the dollar's strength against the won <KRW=> will improve its profitability," said Choi Dae-sik, an analyst at HI Investment & Securities. Hyundai closed 0.7 percent lower after rising by as much as 1.8 percent. Hyundai's smallest domestic rival Ssangyong Motor <003620.KS> picked India's Mahindra <MAHM.BO> as its preferred bidder on Thursday but Ssangyong shares dropped 8.5 percent amid uncertainty over the deal, as it struggles with 740 billion won debt and needs fresh capital to increase investment. "There is uncertainty on whether a deal could be reached. Mahindra wouldn't want to overpay but Ssangyong may need more than what Mahindra proposes to survive," said Jung Mee-kyung, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities. Shares in wire and cable company Taihan Electric Wire <001440.KS> plunged 13.85 percent after the company said it would place 65 million shares, worth 358 billion won, to exisiting shareholders. The share sale at 5,510 won apiece, or a 29 percent discount to Thursday's closing price, would be its second this year after the liquidity-strapped firm sold about 184 billion won worth of shares in April. "It's the second share offering in just four months, which will dilute investors' share value sharply, while there will be no immediate turnaround in its liquidity problems," said Lee Sang-hun, an analyst at HI Investment & Securities. SK Energy Co Ltd <096770.KS> and GS Holdings Corp <078930.KS> also tumbled after state-run Korea National Oil Corp , which leads their oil project consortium, said oil reserves in a field in northern Iraq may be smaller than expected. SK Energy, South Korea's top oil refiner, dropped 5.7 percent and GS Holdings faltered 7.1 percent. Consortium members Daesung Industrial <128820.KS> dropped 12.4 percent and UI Energy Corp <050050.KQ> fell 15 percent.
