The benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average increased 108.09 points, or 1.24 percent, to 8,857.93. But the broader Topix index slipped 0.05 percent to 830.97. "The Nikkei index held firm thanks to gains in exporters as the yen remained under pressure," said Kazuhiro Takahashi, general manager at Daiwa Securities SMBC Co. Ltd. The yen was quoted at 100.84 to the dollar in Tokyo afternoon Monday, little moved from 100.29 in New York late Friday. A weak yen helps exporters as it boosts the value of their repatriated profits. Sentiment in Tokyo was also upbeat as Finance Minister Kaoru Yosano said the government plans to spend more than 10 trillion yen ($99.3 billion yen) in new economic stimulus measures to rescue the world's second largest economy from its deepest recession since World War II. The figure amounts to more than 2 percent of Japan's gross domestic product, Yosano told reporters after meeting with Prime Minister Taro Aso Monday. Officials aim to finalize details of the latest stimulus package by Friday. "As more details on the stimulus package emerged, investors were heartened by the government's aggressive stance on tackling the economic downturn," Takahashi said. He added North Korea's defiant launch of a rocket on Sunday had little impact on the market as it was expected and caused no damage. Japan, which had deployed batteries of Patriot missiles and sea-to-air interceptors on two destroyers off its northwestern coast, did not fire them because no debris from the North Korean rocket appeared to fall toward its territory. Toyota Motor Corp., the world's top automaker, rose 1.1 percent to 3,740 yen. But Nissan Motor Co. edged down 0.4 percent to 462 yen. Sony Corp. was up 1.0 percent at 2,420 yen. Panasonic Corp. increased 2.3 percent to 1,242 yen. The euro, meanwhile, was little changed at $1.3553.
