LAS VEGAS - Carrie Underwood was named entertainer of the year on Sunday at the 44th Academy of Country Music awards, securing her status as country's hottest star on a night that felt like a changing of the guards. Underwood became only the seventh woman in 39 years to win country entertainer of the year, snapping Kenny Chesney's four-year winning streak while also receiving the trophy for top female vocalist.
Farrah Fawcett in L.A. hospital: reports
LOS ANGELES - Actress Farrah Fawcett, who has been battling cancer for almost three years, has been admitted to a Los Angeles hospital, according to news reports. The 62-year-old former star of "Charlie's Angels," was hospitalized on Thursday, according to People magazine.
"Fast & Furious" speeds to No. 1 worldwide
LOS ANGELES - "Fast & Furious," the fourth film in Universal Pictures' hot-rodding franchise, raced to the top spot at the worldwide box office as movie fans with a need for speed snapped up an estimated $102.6 million worth of tickets, the studio said on Sunday. In the United States and Canada, the picture earned $72.5 million during its first three days, smashing "Monsters vs. Aliens'" week-old record for the best opening of the year.
Bon Jovi documentary to rock Tribeca Film Festival
LOS ANGELES will screen what is described as a work-in-progress documentary about Jon Bon Jovi. The previously unknown picture, titled "When We Were Beautiful," follows the musician and his band on their 2008 Lost Highway world tour.
Film world jumping for Easter Bunny
LOS ANGELES - Easter is becoming the new battleground for studios as two competing projects featuring the Easter Bunny go head to head. Sony Animation is pre-emptively picking up "Hip Hop," in which the Easter Bunny decides to retire and hides out as a pet with a suburban family, turning their lives upside down. The tone is being described as along the lines of "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and "The Santa Clause."
U.S. Senator proposes waiting period for ticket resellers
WASHINGTON - Sen. Charles Schumer on Sunday unveiled a proposal aimed at giving fans a better chance to buy hot concert tickets at face value before ticket resellers scoop them up and raise the prices. The proposed legislation would set a two-day waiting period from when tickets go on sale through normal channels before a ticket reseller can buy the tickets to put on the secondary market, Schumer, a New York Democrat, said in a statement.
McCartney and Starr reunite for meditation
NEW YORK - The surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, performed together on Saturday to raise money to help kids learn a meditation technique the 1960s icons practiced at the height of their fame. McCartney was joined onstage by Starr for a rousing rendition of "With a Little Help From My Friends" at Radio City Music Hall at the Change Begins Within concert for the David Lynch Foundation, which promotes Transcendental Meditation.
Metallica rocks Hall of Fame
CLEVELAND - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame gave fans a trip through modern music history on Saturday, inducting a variety of performers into its ranks from "Queen of Rockabilly" Wanda Jackson to rappers Run-D.M.C and rockers Metallica. The climax for the Hall of Fame's induction ceremony came when Metallica, whose hits include "Enter Sandman," took the stage to play a medley of their hit songs. Two of the group's bassists, Jason Newsted and Robert Trujillo, jammed together.
Madonna leaves Malawi after failed adoption bid
LILONGWE - Madonna left Malawi on a private aircraft on Sunday after failing to adopt a second child from the African country, airport officials said. Security forces blocked the road leading to the airport after Madonna's convoy arrived, preventing reporters from speaking to her or filming.

BUCKHURST HILL, England - Thousands of people turned out to bid farewell to reality TV star Jade Goody on Saturday, a fittingly public end for a woman whose life and death were pored over by the celebrity-obsessed media. The one-time dental assistant, who died last month of cervical cancer aged 27, found fame and fortune as a contestant on the popular reality television show "Big Brother."
