Oklahoma City, OK, United States (AHN) - Snow and sleet pummeled parts of Oklahoma and Texas on Thursday, leaving hundreds of thousands of residents without power. The powerful storm caused flights to be canceled and dozens of traffic accidents.
The National Weather Service reports that Friday will bring more severe weather and issued a winter storm warning.
On Thursday, Texas received nearly 12 inches of snow while snow and ice battered the plains of Oklahoma. Officials say the poor visibility and icy roads caused at least 86 traffic accidents.
More than 130,000 homes lost power in Oklahoma, and downed utility lines forced the closure of several major interstates. The longest reported closure was a 50-mile stretch of Interstate 44 southwest of Oklahoma City.
The winter weather also prompted Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry to declare a state of emergency. The decalration was made to help transportation crews and emergency responders prepare for the storm.
Dangerous conditions forced airlines to cancel dozens of flights in the affected region. More than a 100 flights at Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport were grounded. Airlines feared icing on aircraft. Another 35 flights were canceled at Tulsa International Airport and both facilities expect additional cancellations on Friday.
With storm advisories in effect for Friday, forecasters say the ice storm system is expected to continue east. Residents in Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee are now bracing themselves for the severe winter weather.
Over the weekend, the system is expected to hit parts of the eastern seaboard and reach as for south as northern Georgia.
