The 150th anniversary of Checkhov's birth on Friday is Russia's major cultural event of the year and is being celebrated with several startling new productions that show the endless potential to uncover new aspects to his work. MOSCOW (AFP) - – Born 150 years ago as the colossus of Tsarist Russia was just entering an age of change, Anton Chekhov would not live to witness the convulsions that would shake Russia in the 20th century. Yet the plays and short stories of this grocer's son hailed as one of history's greatest writers have lost none of their relevance in Russia, as the country battles through its latest epoch of turbulence. The 150th anniversary of his birth on Friday is Russia's major cultural event of the year and is being celebrated with several startling new productions that show the endless potential to uncover new aspects to his work. A practising doctor who famously described literature as his "mistress", Chekhov's analysis of the daily battle of people to find happiness has ensured his unabated popularity in Russia and abroad for over a century. "He is like someone from the family, a close uncle," said Rimas Tuminas, artistic director of Moscow's Vakhtangov Theatre, whose bold new production of "Uncle Vanya" has received huge acclaim in the Russian capital. "When I feel tired of life I go to him, like to a doctor. And instead of a prescription, he gives me a play. And in the process of rehearsal I get well," Tuminas told AFP. "He tells you to breathe the clean air, to care for people, look after nature. Then you can get well. You look at your problems more calmly and you can think 'thank you that I am in this life'." Other new productions include his early play "Ivanov" at the Moscow Art Theatre (MKhAT) -- the same theatre which saw the premieres of Chekhov's last works under Konstantin Stanislavsky at the turn of the 20th century. Director Yuri Butusov boldly opens his production with the final scene where the Hamlet-like protagonist shoots himself, an action then repeated several more times and emphasising the play's anticipation of modern farce. Despite dying on the eve of the modern age, Chekhov's work paved the way for the bleak 20th-century masterpieces of Harold Pinter and Samuel Beckett. An intrepid voyager before the age of travel, Chekhov visited places as far flung as Russia's Pacific island of Sakhalin, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka in his short life that was ended by tuberculosis in 1904. He showed a sensitivity to the problems of poverty and the environment that was way ahead of its time. The release of new archive material has also offered fresh insights into Chekhov's character, not least his surprising readiness to use erotic and even vulgar language in his correspondence. His love for Olga Knipper, one of the great actresses of the day, was only formalised by marriage after a three-year affair. She would eventually outlive her husband (and even Stalin), dying aged 90 in 1959. Chekhov was born in the Russian city of Taganrog on January 29, 1860, one year before Tsar Alexander II issued his historic decree to emancipate the serfs which would alter the course of Russian history. His dramas are populated by characters disorientated by the dizzying changes where landowners suddenly find their circumstances transformed while an emerging middle class senses new opportunities. His final drama "The Cherry Orchard" presents a character, the merchant Lopakhin, who like Chekhov was from a serf family and bears more than a passing resemblance to the new Russians of the 1990s. He buys up the cherry orchard that has been in the landowning Ranevsky family for generations to build new houses, declaring triumphantly: "I bought the estate where my grandfather and father were slaves, where they were not even allowed into the kitchen." Russians still feel a bitter empathy with the nostalgia of the orchard's former owner Lyubov Ranevskaya when she says, "My sweet, tender, beautiful orchard! My life, youth, happiness, farewell! Farewell!" Lev Dodin, director of Saint Petersburg's innovative Maly Dramatic Theatre who famously flooded the stage with water in a production of "Platonov", said Chekhov's work showed a deep engagement with the society around him. "If we read Chekhov intelligently, we can understand very many things that are going on in contemporary society," he told the Russian theatre journal Stanislavsky. While Chekhov's plays and short stories follow traditional forms, there is more than a hint of modernity in them, not least a sense of strangling claustrophobia. In the short story "Ward Number Six" the psychiatrist Ragin finds himself locked up inside his own asylum. In "The Cherry Orchard" the Ranevskys' servant Firs is forgotten and locked up in the family house after they leave. "In his plays there is the sense that maybe our whole lives are just part of the imagination, that maybe we not living and just preparing for another life," said Tuminas. "In Chekhov there is so much that remains unseen. And it is this that was picked up by Beckett."
