The Vatican has announced a new structure which will make it easier for Anglicans -- including married priests -- to become Roman Catholics. LONDON (AFP) - – Cynical poaching gambit or genuine offer to help those struggling to accept women bishops? The Catholic Church's decision to throw open its doors to dissident Anglicans has split the Christian world. On Tuesday, the Vatican announced a new structure which would make it easier for Anglicans, including married priests, to become Roman Catholics. This could lead to thousands of Anglicans from around the world, including the United States, Australia and Africa, switching to Catholicism in protest at moves to consecrate women bishops, plus the role of openly gay clergy. Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, spiritual leader of the world's Anglicans, insists the move is not meant as "an act of proselytism or aggression", while admitting he only learnt of it a couple of weeks ago. Others disagree. The announcement was described by The Times newspaper on Wednesday as "potentially the most explosive development in Anglican-Catholic relations since the Reformation." "Desperate bishops invited Rome to park its tanks on Archbishop's lawn," ran the headline on its story. With Pope Benedict XVI expected to visit Britain next year and Williams set to go to Rome before the year end, the archbishop's insistence that it would be "business as usual" between the two sides faces some very public tests. The announcement came as the Church of England edges closer to finally approving the consecration of women bishops. When women priests were approved in 1992, a wave of Anglicans switched to Catholicism, whose clergy are all male. A group based in Australia, the Traditional Anglican Communion (TAC), has been most vocal on the issue. It claims a membership of some 400,000, of whom several hundred are thought to want to convert. Williams said the TAC, which split from the Anglican communion in 1991, was among the groups which had approached the Holy See, along with groups in the United States. But he insisted it would be "a serious mistake" to see the latest development as a response to problems within the Anglican communion. Noted Vatican expert Vittorio Messori summed up the criticism within the Catholic Church of Anglican moves to embrace female and homosexual clergy. The Anglican communion has been "unable to resist the hegemonic ideology of political correctness, even though it goes against the Bible," he told Italian financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore. "So in come women priests, then gays who have even become bishops. It's become a place of hypocrisy. "This turn of events has been accepted by the English but not by the faithful spread across other parts of the world. "The Anglican church is falling apart, and even if half a million people leave, that will not affect the trend, which is already marked." Reverend Dr Giles Fraser, canon chancellor of St. Paul's Cathedral in London, played down talk of a split and defections. "The way I read it is, it's a gracious offer by the Holy See to accommodate those people within the Anglican church who are really dissatisfied with the way things are going, particularly over women bishops, and just to give them a home," he told BBC radio. "There's threats that people make and then what the reality is -- they're always two very different things". John Allen, a prominent Vatican expert, said even if some people do leave the Anglican church to become Catholic, there were others moving in the opposite direction. "By all estimates, the number of Catholics who have become Anglicans (up to now) is probably greater. This is a two-way street," he said. Others were less optimistic. The Guardian newspaper's Andrew Brown wrote: "When it comes to elegant funerals, no one can beat the Vatican. "Look at the phrases with which it buried all hopes of reunion, or even significant negotiations, with the Anglican communion, by announcing that it would now welcome whole groups of Anglicans... to become Roman Catholic priests."
