Suspected Papua rebels ambush Indonesian police
AP - Thursday, April 16
JAKARTA, Indonesia - Suspected separatist rebels opened fire on a car carrying police in Indonesia's easternmost Papua province Wednesday, killing one and wounding six others before fleeing into the jungle, an officer said.

The violence in the remote village of Tingginambut came days after general elections that saw a string of deadly attacks in the insurgency-wracked province.
Suspected rebels killed one policeman instantly with a shot to his head on Wednesday, said local police spokesman Nurhabri. Two police were in critical condition with wounds to their stomach and back. The four others were expected to recover.
Forkorus Yaboisembut, a spokesman for a pro-independence group, denied involvement in the shooting, saying they were fighting against injustice without gun.
Indonesia took Papua over in 1969 after a U.N.-sponsored ballot of tribal leaders, which has since been dismissed as a sham.
A small separatist insurgency has raged ever since in the province, which is a mostly Christian region in a nation with a Muslim majority. Tens of thousands have died from Indonesian military offensives, rights groups say.
