ADVERTISEMENT Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the 77-year-old's request for retirement effective immediately, said Hong diocese spokesman Dominic Yung. Zen has passed the normal retirement age for bishops by two years. The pope named bishop John Tong, 69, last year to take over as head of the Hong Kong diocese upon the retirement of Zen, who has headed the diocese since 2002. Zen, an outspoken champion of religious liberty, had said he would teach at a Hong Kong seminary and spend more time monitoring Catholic churches in mainland China after he was relieved of his bishop's duties. The cleric, however, stressed he would not interfere in Sino-Vatican relations because it was a diplomatic matter outside the scope of his duties. "It is not something I can help. It is not something that I can get involved" in, Zen said in a farewell gathering with local reporters last week. Zen, an outspoken advocate of democracy and religious freedom in China, has long been mistrusted by Beijing. Hong Kong and Macau are the only places in China where the Roman Catholic Church is allowed. Beijing severed ties with the Holy See in 1951 after the Communists took power and set up a separate Catholic church outside the pope's authority. Local faithful are allowed to worship only with the state-sanctioned church, the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, which recognizes the pope as a spiritual leader but appoints its own priests and bishops. The Vatican has long indicated that it wants to establish diplomatic relations with Beijing, but will not compromise on the tradition dictating that only the pope _ and not a local church _ can appoint bishops.
