3 Indonesian candidates lose elections, then die

 AP - Wednesday, April 15
JAKARTA, Indonesia - A candidate who failed to win a seat in Indonesia's fiercely contested parliamentary elections committed suicide and at least two others died from heart attacks, police and local news reports said Wednesday.

Thousands of candidates in the nation of 235 million invested their life savings _ in some cases their homes _ to campaign in the third elections since dictator Suharto was ousted from power a decade ago.
Seats in the national, provincial and local legislatures were up for grabs. The posts are well-paid by Indonesian standards with monthly salaries of around $1,200 compared to the average monthly wage of less than $200, and are seen as a chance to wield power and influence.
Sri Wahyuni, a candidate in western Java province, hanged herself from the roof of a hut on the outskirts of her town after preliminary results indicated she had nowhere near the votes needed to win, the official news agency Antara quoted her husband as telling police.
At least two other female candidates in the cities of Buleleng and Solo died of heart attacks after learning they had no chance of winning, police said.
Last week's parliamentary elections_ which set the stage for a presidential ballot on July 8 _ allowed citizens for the first time to vote for candidates as well as political parties.
Those vying for seats sometimes sold their homes, land or borrowed money from loan sharks. Mental hospitals have boosted staff to prepare for counseling of the depressed.
