US-TECH Summary
Reuters - Friday, May 8
Google CEO says he expects more government scrutiny
ADVERTISEMENT
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said he expects more regulatory scrutiny from around the world and the company is paying more attention to the way it approaches certain business issues as a result of the attention. But Schmidt told reporters it had not crossed his mind to recuse himself from the board of Apple Inc <AAPL.O>, even as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission looks into whether the ties between the two companies violate antitrust laws.
Activision eyes "Guitar Hero" TV series, tour
LOS ANGELES - The worldwide hit video game "Guitar Hero" could become a reality TV show and/or a real-life concert tour, people familiar with the discussions said Thursday. "Hero" is from Activision Blizzard, a leading video game publisher that aims to turn some of its games into TV and film properties.
Visionary or plane crazy? Airbus contest to decide
PARIS - Tourists heading south for the winter may be transported to their dream destination in windowless airliners flying in formation like geese if Airbus accepts the advice of tomorrow's potential aircraft engineers. The European planemaker is offering 30,000 euros for the best idea drawn from proposals submitted by 2,350 students in 82 countries after launching a global competition for new concepts.
Windows 7 raises complaints from rivals: report
- Microsoft Corp's <MSFT.O> next version of Windows is stirring fresh complaints of anticompetitive behavior from rivals who say the new version of the operating system gives unfair advantage to Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, the Financial Times reported. "Our initial review suggests this is a blatant use of the Windows operating system to change the market dynamics of browser usage," Mitchell Baker, chairperson of Mozilla, developer of open-source Firefox browser, told the paper.
Microsoft to buy game maker BigPark
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> said on Thursday it will buy computer game designer BigPark Inc for an undisclosed amount, as it pushes its strategy of producing exclusive games for its Xbox entertainment system. Microsoft has already been working with Vancouver, Canada-based BigPark over the past year on a game for the Xbox, but has so far announced no details. More information is expected at the video game industry's annual E3 Expo in June.
Irish student's Jarre wiki hoax dupes journalists
DUBLIN - "When I die there will be a final waltz playing in my head," Oscar-winning French composer Maurice Jarre once said, according to several newspapers reporting his death in March. However, the quotation was invented by an Irish student who posted it on the Wikipedia website in a hoax designed to show the dangers of relying too heavily on the Internet for information.
Nintendo sees slowdown ahead
TOKYO/OSAKA - Nintendo Co Ltd <7974.OS> reported a 42 percent fall in quarterly operating profit as the yen's strength outweighed robust game sales, and the Japanese video game maker forecast a bigger-than-expected 12 percent profit decline this year, pressuring its shares. Despite the slide in quarterly profit, Nintendo has fared much better than many other consumer electronics makers. Sony Corp <6758.T>, for instance, is deep in the red, hurt by a strong yen, feeble demand and ballooning restructuring costs.
AMD shakes up organization, promotes executive
SAN FRANCISCO - Advanced Micro Devices Inc <AMD.N> merged its microprocessor and graphics chip businesses on Wednesday, its latest effort to adjust its structure and claw back market share lost to larger rival Intel Corp <INTC.O>.
Google: American phenomenon and antitrust target
WASHINGTON - Google <GOOG.O> is more than a fabulously successful company -- it is a cultural phenomenon facing increasing U.S. government scrutiny despite its chief executive's campaign support for President Barack Obama. The No. 1 Internet search company and provider of text-based search ads is finding size attracts attention from antitrust enforcers still party to a settlement with personal computer operating system giant Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>.
Twitter co-founder says company not for sale
SAN FRANCISCO - The popular micro-blogging and social networking service Twitter is not for sale, one of the company's founders said on TV on Wednesday. Biz Stone made the declaration in an appearance on the ABC show "The View."
