ADVERTISEMENT Armed police surrounded the house in the North Island city of Napier where the gunman, identified as former army reservist Jan Molenaar, 51, fired a fusillade of shots from an automatic rifle during a police drug raid early Thursday, Superintendent Sam Hoyle said. One officer was killed in the shooting and two others were seriously wounded, along with a bystander. The dead officer's body lay beside his police car outside the house as the standoff continued more than 12 hours after the shootings, Hoyle told reporters. Volleys of gunfire had stymied attempts to retrieve the body, Hoyle said. Some 30 armed police had surrounded the property where the gunman was holed up. "He cannot leave," Hoyle told reporters. Children had huddled in classrooms and office workers hunkered down in high rises after police locked down part of the Hospital Hill end of the port city, which is about 196 miles (316 kilometers) north of Wellington. Police later led children to safety from five schools near the shooting site. Scores of residents trapped in their homes were also rescued by police overnight, Napier Mayor Barbara Arnott said, while some remained sheltered in houses. "At least 500 could not return to their homes" last night, she told National Radio. "It's a pretty eerie feeling .... with all the house (lights) off, its eerily dark." Nearly 24 hours later, the gunman was still in his house, sporadically firing bursts from an automatic rifle but refusing to speak with police trying to negotiate an end to the siege, officials said. His brother, Peter Molenaar, spoke with the suspect by radio and urged him to give himself up. "But it's hard to say what's going through a person's head," he added. He said family were not aware his brother had weapons. Asked whether his brother would come out alive, he said: "I'm not very sure about that." Molenaar's mother Anna said she was sorry for her son's actions. "I just want to apologize to the police who have been shot and those who are injured and in hospital," she told said in an interview on New Zealand television. She said she had difficulty understanding her son's actions. "What was he trying to protect? That's what I want to know. A silly marijuana plant?" she said. Police said the shooting began after the arrival of the three unarmed officers with a drugs search warrant. The police officer who was shot dead was the 29th killed on duty in New Zealand since 1890. New Zealand police routinely do not carry arms.
