Global Language Monitor announced the landmark addition on its website Wednesday, noting that the phrase "jai ho" and the word "slumdog," made popular by the Academy Award-winning movie, just missed being added. The language tracking site defined "Web 2.0" as "a technical term meaning the next generation of World Wide Web products and services." GLM noted that the word had gained momentum within the past six months because of usage by celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher and Oprah Winfrey and even President Barack Obama. GLM president and "chief word analyst" Paul Payack said a "predictive quantities indicator" was used that evaluated both the number of times a word was used and the number of places around the world in which it was used. Payack said that a new English word was created every 98 minutes. The site has already added the 1 millionth and first word or phrase: financial tsunami.
