(AHN) - The House of Representatives passed a resolution late Thursday praising the bravery of employees at the Holocaust Memorial Museum when a gunman opened fire at the museum, killing one security guard. President Barack Obama, who only last week visited Buchenwald with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, has expressed sadness over the incident, which Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called "deplorable." Congressmen passed the bipartisan resolution from Rep. Ron Klein (D-FL), the co-chair of the Congressional Task Force Against Anti-Semitism. All 242 Democrats and 171 Republicans present cast yeas for the measure; 21 lawmakers were not present to vote. The legislation condemns the attack and honors the courage and dedication of employees of the museum. It also requires congressmen to "redouble [their] commitment to advancing the mission of the Holocaust Memorial Museum, which is to educate people about the Holocaust and fight against anti-Semitism, racism, hatred and intolerance," according to Klein. James von Brunn, an 88-year-old self-confessed white supremacist and Holocaust denier, has been charged with murdering Stephen Johns, a security guard who opened the door for him when he openened fire at the museum on Wednesday. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has said the Capitol was "shaken to the core" when lawmakers heard news of the shooting. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) has also said in a statement, "Acts of violence like this have no place in our society. Likewise, hatred toward any individual or group on account of race or religion must never be tolerated. As we mourn, we pray for the soul of Mr. Johns, peace for his family, and justice for the man responsible for this tragedy." Obama was in Buchenwald less than a week before the shooting, condemning those who spread "lies" about the Holocaust and pledging to "never forget" what he saw during his tour with the Chancellor and Nobel laureate and concentration camp survivor Elie Wiesel. "We saw the ovens of the crematorium, the guard towers, the foundations of barracks that once held people... [that] have not lost their horror.... the resistance that formed and the irony that the base for the resistance was in the latrine areas because the guards found it so offensive that they wouldn't go there. And so out of the filth, that became a space in which small freedoms could thrive.," he had said. "This work is not yet finished. To this day, there are those who insist that the Holocaust never happened -- a denial of fact and truth that is baseless and ignorant and hateful. This place is the ultimate rebuke to such thoughts; a reminder of our duty to confront those who would tell lies about our history," Obama added. The President said Thursday in a statement that he was "shocked and saddened" by the museum shooting. But he also made clear, "No act of violence will diminish our determination to honor those who were lost by building a more peaceful and tolerant world." The same day, Clinton told reporters at the State Department, "The kind of hatred that the killer evidenced over many years toward different groups within our society is deplorable. I hope that we will be able to send out a clear, unmistakable message that hateful rhetoric, violence based on any kind of discriminatory attitude toward any group in the United States is not acceptable, and that any groups or individuals who foment that kind of rhetoric, that unfortunately we see on the internet... need to think very hard about the consequences of that kind of incitement."
