MySpace prepares for 'massive' layoffs: report
ADVERTISEMENT
NEW YORK - News Corp's <NWSA.O> MySpace refused to comment on Thursday on a report the previous day that said the online social network will fire a "massive" number of employees. The online social network is preparing to lay off as many as 500 of its 1,600 workers, the TechCrunch blog reported on Wednesday, as it cuts costs while trying to stay ahead of growing competition from rival Facebook.
Ex-government cyber official, exec mulled for czar job
WASHINGTON - Microsoft's security chief and a veteran of Clinton's and Bush's national security teams are leading candidates for cybersecurity czar, a job that needs White House access and clout to protect networks that underpin the U.S. economy. President Barack Obama promised last month that he would personally decide who would lead the fight against an epidemic of cybercrime and organize a response to any major cyber attack.
AOL acquires two local web startups
NEW YORK - AOL has struck deals to acquire two small start-up companies focused on local online media, Patch Media Corp and Going Inc, ahead of its separation from Time Warner Inc <TWX.N>. AOL's new chief executive, Tim Armstrong, was an early investor in Patch Media, which was founded in 2007 and concentrates on news and information through a series of local community sites or "patches." In a memo to staff, Armstrong said he would forego any profit on his investment.
Palm names Rubinstein CEO days after Pre launch
SAN FRANCISCO - Palm Inc <PALM.O> named Jon Rubinstein its CEO on Wednesday, hoping the former Apple <AAPL.O> executive will usher in a new era for a company seeking to revive its fortunes with a fresh smartphone launched last weekend. Rubinstein, who was brought in as Palm's executive chairman when private equity firm Elevation Partners bought a stake in the company in 2007, played frontman for the new "Pre" phone, popping up at various industry conferences and touring retail outlets.
China Internet filter challenged in rights uproar
BEIJING - A Chinese lawyer has demanded a public hearing to reconsider a government demand that all new personal computers carry Internet filtering software, adding to uproar over a plan critics say is ineffective and intrusive. Li Fangping, a Beijing human rights advocate who often embraces controversial causes, has asked the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to allow hearings on the "lawfulness and reasonableness" of the demand, which takes effect from July 1 and was publicized only this week.
Microsoft to sell Windows in EU without browser
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> said on Thursday it would ship the newest version of its Windows operating system in Europe without its Internet Explorer web browser, in a move to counter European regulators' concerns that the company unfairly forces out competition from other browser makers. The apparent climb-down comes shortly before the European Commission is due to rule on antitrust charges brought against Microsoft in January, claiming that the world's largest software company abuses its dominant position by bundling its Internet Explorer browser, shielding it from head-to-head competition with rival products.
HP to sell Symantec backup on consumer PCs
BOSTON - Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N>, the world's biggest PC maker, will help sell online backup services from Symantec Corp <SYMC.O>, which is looking to expand its consumer business beyond its line of Norton security products. Symantec said on Thursday that HP will ship all the personal computers it sells to consumers with preloaded Symantec software that offers subscription to an Internet-based PC backup service.
Digital downloads spell end for videogame stores?
LOS ANGELES - Will digital downloads kill the videogames store? That's the multibillion dollar question facing retailers from Wal-Mart Stores Inc <WMT.N> and Target Corp <TGT.N> to GameStop Corp <GME.N>, as Internet distributors continue to grow. Retailers like Target splashed out on large booths at last week's E3 Expo in Los Angeles, showcasing games like Activision's <ATVI.O> "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."
Microsoft to unveil free anti-virus software
BOSTON Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> is getting ready to unveil a long-anticipated free anti-virus service for personal computers that will compete with products sold by Symantec Corp <SYMC.O> and McAfee Inc <MFE.N>. A Microsoft spokesman said on Wednesday that the world's biggest software maker is testing an early version of the product with its own employees. Microsoft would "soon" make a trial version, or product beta, available via its website, he added, but declined to provide a specific date.
Aboriginal kids get free laptops to fight illiteracy
ELCHO ISLAND, Australia - Soon after getting a green laptop distributed free to Aboriginal school children in hopes of combating illiteracy and truancy, Jericho Lacey learned his computer was good for more than just homework. From his home on Elcho Island, an impoverished tropical outpost, Lacey writes school essays and occasionally plays "maze games" and surfs the net.
