Indonesian smoking ban debate ends in deadlock
AP - 29 minutes ago
PADANG PANJANG, Indonesia - A meeting of hundreds of Indonesian clerics ended Sunday without agreement after they debated whether to issue an edict banning smoking in one of the world's largest tobacco markets.
The Ulema Council, Indonesia's top Islamic body, called the weekend meeting to discuss the issue in Padang Panjang, a village in West Sumatra province.
But cleric Amin Suma said Sunday the talks ended in a deadlock.
Some argued lighting up was sinful because it was harmful to health. Others said the important role the tobacco industry played in Indonesia's economy could not be ignored.
The two sides will ask leaders at their Jakarta headquarters how to proceed.
Indonesia is a secular country of 235 million people, 90 percent of whom are Muslim.
