Indian prime minister's heart surgery successful
AP - Sunday, January 25
NEW DELHI - Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh successfully underwent heart bypass surgery Saturday, officials said, amid uncertainty over whether his medical problems could affect his candidacy for upcoming elections.
"We must thank the surgeons, the team of doctors," the ruling Congress party's spokesman Veerappa Moily told reporters. He gave no other details on the surgery.
The 76-year-old Singh, who has held office since 2004, has been expected to run as the Congress Party's candidate for prime minister in elections to be held before May.
It was not immediately clear how long Singh would need to fully recover and resume his duties or how his medical problems would affect election plans.
Also running as candidates for Singh's party are star campaigners Sonia Gandhi, chief of the Congress Party, and her son Rahul Gandhi, both of whom represent the party in Parliament.
The prime minister's spokeswoman Deepak Sandhu told reporters at the hospital that the surgery was a success and that a medical briefing would be held later Saturday. She also gave no details.
The procedure, which lasted several hours, began early Saturday morning, the Press Trust of India news agency said, citing Dr. Sudhir Vaishnav from the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai.
A team of 11 doctors was involved in the surgery, Vaishnav said.
Singh, who has a history of heart problems, complained of chest pains earlier in the week and underwent a series of tests.
Sandhu said Friday that Singh would undergo "coronary artery bypass graft surgery" performed by a combined team of doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the country's top state-run hospital, and the Asian Heart Institute.
Singh, the country's first prime minister from the Sikh faith, had bypass surgery in England in 1990 and another heart procedure in 2004.
Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee will take charge of the finance ministry, which was looked after by Singh and will chair any meetings of India's Cabinet while the prime minister recovers from surgery, Sandhu said.
