Sri Lanka says it has captured 2 rebel bomb plants
AP - 51 minutes ago
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Sri Lankan troops captured two Tamil Tiger rebel bases in the north that had likely been used as centers for bomb-making, the military said Sunday.
Soldiers seized the bases in Puthukudiyiruppu village in the rebel stronghold of Mullaittivu on Sunday, military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said.
Cases of TNT, some 4,000 detonators and barrels of acid were found at the bases, Nanayakkara said.
Separately, soldiers clashed with rebels at three locations Saturday and recovered the bodies of five insurgents, Nanayakkara said.
Rebel officials could not be reached for comment because communications to the northern war zone have been cut. It is very difficult to verify the military's battle accounts because most journalists are barred from the area.
Government forces have made swift progress since the beginning of the year in their push to crush the separatist rebel movement, seizing the insurgents' de facto capital of Kilinochchi and boxing them into a shrinking territory in the northeast.
Tamil Tiger rebels have fought since 1983 to create a separate state for ethnic minority Tamils who have suffered discrimination at the hands of successive governments controlled by majority ethnic Sinhalese.
More than 70,000 people have been killed in the violence.
