BlackBerry's corporate dominance seen eroding
TORONTO - Shares in Research In Motion <RIM.TO> <RIMM.O> slipped more than 3 percent on Friday morning as investors fretted the BlackBerry smartphone's stranglehold on corporate communications was being eroded by rival devices. Bank of America <BAC.N> and Citigroup <C.N> have joined a growing throng of financial institutions eyeing alternatives to the BlackBerry for corporate email.
Dell switching off BlackBerry, onto own smartphone
SAN FRANCISCO - Dell Inc <DELL.O> will shift thousands of its employees off Research in Motion Ltd's <RIM.TO> BlackBerry and over to Dell's smartphones, the company said on Thursday. The money-saving switch affects the roughly 25,000 Dell employees who carry a company-issued BlackBerry. Dell employs around 100,000 people worldwide.
Western Digital looking at digital home for growth
LOS ANGELES - Hard drive manufacturer Western Digital Corp <WDC.N> is focusing on investing in products and strategies to serve the "digital home," said the company's chief financial officer. Hard-drive makers face a challenge from flash storage and computer devices such as Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad tablet, which does not use a hard drive.
Oracle may aim to claim billions more from SAP
OAKLAND, California - Oracle Corp <ORCL.O> has laid the groundwork to claim billions of dollars more from SAP AG <SAPG.DE> than previously indicated, raising the stakes in their closely watched legal battle over software theft. SAP, Europe's largest software firm, has admitted to liability for the theft by a now-defunct subsidiary, TomorrowNow. The two are fighting it out to determine how much the German company should compensate its bigger American rival.
BofA and Citigroup testing iPhone for corporate email: report
- Bank of America <BAC.N> and Citigroup <C.N> are evaluating whether to allow their employees to use Apple's <AAPL.O> iPhone as an alternative to Research In Motion's <RIM.TO> BlackBerry for corporate email, Bloomberg said, citing three people familiar with the plan. The banks are already testing software that is designed to make iPhone secure enough for company messages, the agency said, citing people familiar with the plan.
Cisco CEO comments key to igniting stock gains
NEW YORK - Investors will focus on whether Cisco Systems Inc <CSCO.O> Chief Executive John Chambers, who spooked Wall Street last quarter with unusually cautious comments about the technology business, will regain some of his usual cheer when Cisco reports earnings next week. The network equipment giant and sector bellwether is expected to deliver a strong set of results and an upbeat outlook. That, and a vote of confidence from Chambers, could boost its shares, which have languished in the past three months. A positive outlook could also raise hopes for a stronger recovery ahead in the overall technology sector.
Another Foxconn worker dies at south China plant
HONG KONG - A worker has committed suicide at Foxconn Technology Group's south China manufacturing complex, the company said on Friday, the latest in a string of young migrant workers who have died at its factories this year. A key manufacturer of iPhones and iPads for Apple <AAPL.O> and computer gadgets for other global brands like Hewlett Packard <HPQ.N> and Dell, the company said the 23-year-old male employee was found dead early on Friday outside a dormitory.
Google and Facebook to face tougher EU privacy rules
BRUSSELS wants stronger privacy rules to give Internet users more control over how social-networking sites such as Facebook, or search engines such as Google <GOOG.O> use their personal information. The new rules, which would overhaul 15-year-old laws, will be prepared next year, following public consultations, EU officials said.
Dell to focus on services expansion as demand recovers
HONG KONG - Dell Inc <DELL.O>, the world's No.2 PC maker, will focus its M&A activity on expanding IT services in specific markets as it diversifies beyond its core PC business, a senior executive said on Thursday. The company would not concentrate on making huge acquisitions in the near future, Steve Schuckenbrock, global president for Dell's large enterprise business, told a news conference.
Samsung sees selling 40 million smartphones in 2011: report
- Samsung Electronics Co <005930.KS> plans to sell more than 40 million smartphones worldwide in 2011, double the projection for the current year, the Nikkei business daily reported citing a senior official at the South Korean company. Shin Jong-kyun, head of Samsung's mobile division, told reporters in Seoul that the firm expects to sell more than 20 million smartphones this year, up from the 18 million units eyed at the beginning of the year, the paper said.
