"Give back the Machu Picchu items," was among the chants from people in the protests. About 4,000 people participated in the protest in Cuzco, the former Incan capital located around 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Machu Picchu. Another gathering was planned for Lima later in the day with Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde. The actions came days after President Alan Garcia asked US President Barack Obama to help Peru recover the archaeological pieces, including ceramics and bones brought to the US university by Hiram Bingham between 1912 and 1916. Peru claims the university has some 46,000 items but Yale says there are only 5,500 of which 330 are museum quality. Garcia has said he hopes to recover the items for a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the "rediscovery" of Machu Picchu in July 2011, referring to Bingham's arrival which opened up the 15th century Peruvian citadel to the Western world. Peruvian authorities have been locked in a seven-year battle with Yale over the artifacts. Yale said last month it was prepared to resolve the issue in a way that would allow scholarly research to continue but that Peru must end its threat of criminal prosecution. Yale has argued it has legal possession of the artifacts.
