The Labor Department reported that 151,000 nonfarm jobs were created in October, much better than expected, adding the first jobs since May although the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.6 percent for the third month. Obama called the figures encouraging, but reiterated that more needed to be done as he on Friday left for Asia just days after Republicans romped home in mid-term elections to retake control of the House of Representatives. "The fact is, an encouraging jobs report doesn't make a difference if you're still one of the millions of people who are looking for work. And I won't be satisfied until everybody who is looking for a job can find one," he pledged. "So we've got to keep fighting for every job, for every new business, for every opportunity to get this economy moving." The outcome of Tuesday's elections in which the Democrats clung onto a narrow majority in the Senate have sent a strong rebuke to the Obama administration for failing to fix the nation's sluggish economy. Related article: Security tight for Obama visit to Mumbai And with all eyes now turning to the 2012 presidential elections, both Republicans and Democrats say that they have heard the message from the voters loud and clear that economic recovery has to take priority. Obama, whose message of hope and change swept him to power in 2008, has taken a conciliatory tone with his Republican rivals urging both sides to stop "squabbling" and focus on getting things done. But Republicans have taken aim at Obama's agenda, vowing to slash government spending and target his signature health care overhaul when the new Congress session opens in January. The party's congressional leaders have also vowed to roll back government regulations they say stifle business; cut government spending and taxes; and investigate the administration. Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner, sure to replace Democrat Nancy Pelosi as House speaker, has already delivered a take-no-prisoners message unveiling a "Pillars of a New Majority" statement of principles. "President Obama must decide whether he will heed the will of the people and work with us to address their concerns, or continue on a path the people have rejected," said Boehner on Thursday. "I am open to any idea, any proposal, any way we can get the economy growing faster so that people who need work can find it faster," he said, including tax breaks which are popular among Republicans. Obama has already set the goal of doubling America's exports over the next five years, and said during his nine-day trip to Asia he would be focused on opening up markets in the economically dynamic region, particularly in India. On the tour he will visit India, his boyhood home of Indonesia, South Korea for the G20 summit and then Japan for APEC meetings. "It's also absolutely clear that one of the keys to creating jobs is to open markets to American goods made by American workers," the president said. "Our prosperity depends not just on consuming things, but also on being the maker of things. In fact, for every billion we increase in exports, thousands of jobs are supported here at home," he said. "We can't spend the next two years mired in gridlock. Other countries, like China, aren't standing still. So we can't stand still either. We've got to move forward." China became a punchbag during the heated US election campaign, accused by some would-be senators and representatives of killing American jobs by flooding markets with cheap goods and keeping its yuan currency artificially low. Pelosi, meanwhile, announced on Friday that she would seek to lead Democrats when the new US Congress is sworn in come January. "Our work is far from finished," she said in a letter to colleagues announcing her plans to run for House minority leader, citing the need to protect Obama's sweeping health care overhaul and Wall Street reforms. "We have no intention of allowing our great achievements to be rolled back. It is my hope that we can work in a bipartisan way to create jobs and strengthen the middle class," she added.
