Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Iran accuses US, Britain, Pakistan over bombing AFP - Tuesday, October 20 Send IM Story Print TEHRAN (AFP) - – An Iranian general on Monday accused Pakistan, Britain and the United States of aiding Sunni rebels behind a devastating suicide attack which killed 42 people, including seven military commanders. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in a telephone conversation with his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari, separately charged that those behind Sunday's bombing were in Pakistan and needed to be "quickly confronted." The suicide bomber blew himself up at a meeting on Sunday of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards and local tribesmen in Iran's restive Sistan-Baluchestan province, a hotbed of Sunni insurgency. Iranian officials said the attack at a gymnasium in the town of Pisheen near the Pakistan border was claimed by Sunni militant rebel leader Abdolmalek Rigi, whose Jundallah (Soldiers of God) group has for years been waging war against the Shiite rule of Iran. The head of the Revolutionary Guards Corps, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, said Monday that an Iranian delegation would head to Pakistan to deliver "proof" that Islamabad is supporting Rigi. "The delegation will ask for him (Rigi) to be handed over," Jafari was quoted as saying by ISNA news agency. Jafari also charged that Rigi takes orders from the intelligence services of Britain, Pakistan and the United States. Related article: Iran Guards -- prestige target for rebels "The group of Rigi has direct contact with the American and British intelligence services and unfortunately the Pakistani intelligence service," Jafari said. "He is supported by them and without doubt he is acting under their orders and plans." General Mohammad Pakpour, the head of Guards' ground forces and whose deputy was killed in the powerful blast, on the same theme said Washington and London were backing those who carried out the attack against Iran's prestigious military force. "The terrorists were trained in the neighbouring country (Pakistan) by the Americans and British. The enemies of the Islamic Republic of Iran are unable to tolerate the unity in the country," Pakpour said on state television. Iran's first deputy speaker Mohammad Hassan Abutorabi rammed home the point, telling parliament on Monday that "the horrible crime in Sistan-Baluchestan was carried out with the direct support of criminal America and its mercenaries." Hours after the attack, Ahmadinejad charged that the assault was plotted in Pakistan. "We became aware that some of agents in Pakistan were cooperating with the main elements of today's terrorist incident and we consider it to be our right to demand the rendition of these criminals," Fars quoted Ahmadinejad as saying. On Monday he urged Zardari to confront the Jundallah rebels. "Iran and Pakistan have a brotherly relationship but the presence of terrorist elements in Pakistan is not justifiable," Ahmadinejad told Zardari during a telephone call received from the Pakistan leader, Iran's official IRNA news agency said. "The Pakistani government should help to quickly arrest these criminals so they can punished," the Iranian president said, adding: "The criminal terrorists must be seriously confronted by setting up a bilateral timetable." Rigi's Jundallah has in recent years repeatedly attacked the Guards, the elite military force set up after the 1979 Islamic revolution to protect the Islamic regime from internal and external threats. Some of the dead who hailed from Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan, were being buried on Monday in the city, according to footage shown by state television. A senior Iranian judiciary official in the province, Hojatoleslam Ebrahim Hamidi, said that "more than 30 Sunni tribal chiefs" were among the dead and questioned Jundallah's claims to be promoting the Baluchi cause. Washington denied any involvement and said it condemns this act of "terrorism and mourn the loss of innocent lives." Britain too denied the allegations that it aided rebels behind the attack. "We reject in the strongest terms any assertion that this attack has anything to do with Britain," a Foreign Office spokeswoman said in London.
