Special Report: iPad striptease: It's what's inside that counts SAN FRANCISCO - The iPad will not hit stores until Saturday, but the race to unlock its mysteries started several weeks ago in San Luis Obispo, a picturesque college town roughly 200 miles south of Apple's Silicon Valley headquarters. On March 12, Kyle Wiens and Luke Soules woke up before dawn. Their plan demanded that they be among the first to get their hands on the device. Reviews praise Apple iPad battery life, ease of use NEW YORK - Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad scored well on battery life and ease of use in its first reviews, but it will not obliterate the laptop computer market yet, according to The New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Reviewers at both papers said the tablet computer, which goes on sale Saturday, works nicely for Web surfing or using media such as video and books, but it may appeal less to people who need laptops for more heavy-duty chores. IMAX puts 3D spin on science films with "Hubble 3D" LOS ANGELES - IMAX has returned to outer space with the movie "IMAX: Hubble 3D," a documentary that harks back to IMAX's roots in science films, but spins into a 3D, Hollywood orbit. In recent years, the company known for giant-screen films has carved out a valuable business boosting the size of big-budget studio movies like "Avatar" and "How to Train Your Dragon" to suit larger screens, both in 2D and 3D. With its newest effort, however, IMAX returns to its role of offering large-format science films, albeit this time in trendy 3D. Sharp to launch advanced 3D panels for mobile gear TOKYO - Sharp Corp <6753.T> said it plans to start making this year advanced 3D displays for cellphones and other mobile devices that don't require special viewing glasses, betting that demand for 3D images will grow beyond movie theatres and living rooms to portable machines. Stirring demand for small-sized displays is important for Japanese LCD panel suppliers after they suffered sluggish demand for panels designed for portable electronics due to a sharp slide in mobile phone sales in the domestic market. China journalist club shuts website after attack BEIJING - The Foreign Correspondents Club of China said on Friday it had shut its website after a burst of hacker attacks, days after attacks on the Yahoo email accounts of some foreign journalists covering China were discovered. "We do not know who is behind the attacks or what their motivation is," the club's board said in an emailed statement explaining it had decided to shut down temporarily the site after two days of "persistent" attacks. Taiwan's HTC says Apple suit not affecting operations TAIPEI - Taiwan's HTC Corp <2498.TW>, the world's No.5 smartphone maker, said on Friday a lawsuit against it by Apple Computer <AAPL.O> was not affecting operations. "It's part of business," Chief Executive Peter Chou told reporters at a news conference where HTC launched new smartphones. "We need to face it and everyone can talk it through." Microsoft sues UK game controller maker SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> on Thursday filed a lawsuit claiming British video game accessory maker Datel Design and Development Ltd is illegally copying the software company's game console controllers. Microsoft, which makes the Xbox game system, claims Datel's "TurboFire" and "WildFire" wireless controllers -- which resemble Xbox controllers and sell for up to $50 on the Internet -- infringe a number of Microsoft patents. U.S. appeals court rules for eBay in Tiffany spat NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO - EBay Inc did not engage in trademark infringement and dilution by selling counterfeit Tiffany & Co <TIF.N> goods on its website, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Thursday, but it ordered further review of the jeweler's claim of false advertising. Tiffany and other luxury brands have long argued that counterfeit merchandise bearing their names is sold on eBay <EBAY.O>. The Web commerce company, which does not itself put the goods up for sale, says it has spent millions of dollars to track down counterfeiters and remove such listings. New website brings crowd sourcing to fashion NEW YORK - An Internet startup called Fashion Stake launching in coming weeks aims to shake up the fashion industry, just as peer-to-peer file sharing changed the music industry. Fashion Stake will allow customers to directly fund fashion designers by browsing on-line collections and buying a stake in a collection in return for credits to buy clothes. Patrons can also share ideas with designers and vote on collections.
