"Glee" throws lifeline to music industry
LOS ANGELES - To measure the impact of "Glee" on pop music in 2010, just remember this: The misfits of McKinley High now have a place in the history books above the Fab Four. In October, recordings by the show's cast overtook the Beatles in terms of the number of songs placed on the Billboard Hot 100. As of December, "Glee" now has 102 songs on the chart -- and with at least a season-and-a-half to go that has already been guaranteed by Fox, it's a safe bet that the cast recordings will give Elvis Presley a run for the top spot in the record books with 108 singles. The show has become a single-selling machine the likes of which Ed Sullivan could only dream about.
L.A. film critics befriend "Social Network"
LOS ANGELES - "The Social Network," a tense drama recounting the back-stabbing early days of Facebook, was named best picture on Sunday by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, a group whose edgy picks rarely align with the Academy Awards. The film won in three other categories including best director, where David Fincher tied with Olivier Assayas for the French terrorism epic "Carlos." It also won for Aaron Sorkin's screenplay and tied with "The Ghost Writer" for music/score.
Foreign moviegoers rescue ailing "Narnia"
LOS ANGELES - The third movie in the shaky "Narnia" fantasy franchise took the top spot at the worldwide box office on Sunday despite a soft start in North America where it overshadowed "The Tourist," the new bomb starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" sold $105.5 million worth of tickets globally, distributor 20th Century Fox said.
Jazz great James Moody dies of cancer, age 85
LOS ANGELES - Jazz saxophonist James Moody, a master of improvisation who was best known for his "Moody's Mood for Love," has died in San Diego after a 10-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 85. Moody died on Thursday at the San Diego Hospice and Institute for Palliative care, where he had been since earlier this week, his wife Linda Moody said in a post on his website.
Eminem's "Recovery" earns top spot on R&B/Hip-hop charts
LOS ANGELES .
Ke$ha is Billboard's Hot 100 artist of the year
NEW YORK - Sometimes I need to remind myself that 'TiK ToK' only went to No. 1 in January," Ke$ha says of her party-hearty electro-pop jam. "Because it kind of feels like it was 17 years ago." Doesn't it, though? As far as new artists go, 2010 more or less belonged to this 23-year-old Nashville native, who released her hit debut, "Animal," in January, then followed it up last month with a nine-track mini-album, "Cannibal."
No bloodbath for "Dexter" season finale, producer says
LOS ANGELES - "Dexter" reaches its season 5 finale on Sunday, but the executive producer of the Showtime serial killer show said viewers should not expect the kind of bloodbath that marked the climax of Season 4. The Hollywood Reporter spoke with executive producer Sara Colleton about what is in store for "Dexter" fans.
"Hurt Locker" best picture Oscar fades in memory: poll
LOS ANGELES -- according to a poll of 700 award show viewers conducted for the Hollywood Reporter by the global research company Penn Schoen Berland.
MTV bids to turn "Skins" haters into fans
NEW YORK - MTV's "Skins", an adaptation of the hit British show about a clutch of libidinous teens, has yet to premiere in the U.S. But the claws have been out for months. The original British series frankly explored controversial themes including sexual orientation, drug and alcohol use, family dysfunction and mental illness including eating disorders.
Bon Jovi named top touring act of 2010
NASHVILLE . But this year, another act can claim that title: Bon Jovi.
