Over the past week, the central bank has been buying U.S. dollars aggressively and making telephone calls to dealers to curb the Taiwan dollar's strength. Late on Thursday, the central bank distributed a printout with quotes by prominent economists and economic organisations warning how hot money can be risky for economies, and hinting that it was ready to curb rife speculation on the Taiwan dollar, dealers said. "It is very clear that the bank will not tolerate the Taiwan dollar rising sharply against the U.S. currency, at least in the short term," said a dealer in Taipei. "The tough stance by the central bank prompted foreign investors to take profit on their positions." The cental bank's move came as other Asian central banks bought U.S. dollars early in the global session on Thursday to weaken their own currencies, traders said, as the slumping greenback threatened smaller export-driven economies. [ID:nN08536643] The Taiwan dollar tracked the rising trend among Asian peers as foreign funds bought assets in the region after Australia raised interest rates earlier this week. The Taiwan dollar is expected to hover at T$32.20 next week, as Taiwan stocks <.TWII> may not be able to extend their upward momentum, said the dealer. Taiwan's stocks <.TWII> rose 0.6 percent, with dealers watching for the impact of foreign fund movements on the Taiwan dollar. 0245 GMT PREVIOUS DAY T$ Volume in $ mln 325 357 T$ Six-month NDFs <PNDF> -0.710/-0.660 -0.800/-0.750 Note: Taipei Forex Inc is Taiwan's main forex exchange; Cosmos is a smaller exchange Source: NDFs quotations from Prebon Asia For more foreign exchange news, please click [nTOPFRX] Recommend Send IM Story Print Related Articles Japan Hot Stocks-Metal stocks, Promise, Nintendo, Disco Reuters - Friday, October 9 Indian rupee largely steady; stocks open awaited Reuters - Friday, October 9 China HNC says antimony mine accident kills 26 Reuters - Friday, October 9 CNOOC Huizhou gas field resumes after typhoon, oil remains shut Reuters - Friday, October 9 Japan's Kan says small firms' funding severe Reuters - Friday, October 9 News Search Top Stories Britain will not back Opel plan: report US Fed to tighten policy when outlook improves Millionaire's son guilty in NY high society trial NASA to begin massive climate survey of Antarctica Chinese fossil find gives clue to ear's evolution More Top Stories » ADVERTISEMENT Most Popular Most Viewed Most Recommended Tiny moon feeds largest ring around Saturn Tiny device could speed breast cancer detection: study Aer Lingus to slash hundreds of jobs, cut pay Chinese fossil find gives clue to ear's evolution Breakthrough hope for breast cancer treatment More Most Viewed » Oldest hominid skeleton sheds light on human origins More Most Recommended » Elsewhere on Yahoo!
