Dealers said higher portfolio inflows, coupled with dollar sales by exporters, helped the rupee gain. * Pakistani stocks ended at a 19-month high on Wednesday amid optimism that high-level talks between Pakistan and the United States would yield positive results. The Karachi Stock Exchange's benchmark 100-share index <.KSE> ended 1.84 percent, or 182.92 points, higher at 10,146.27. Volume was 159.22 million shares, compared with 73.43 million shares traded on Monday. [.KA] * The net inflow of foreign portfolio investment in the stock market was $2.04 million on Wednesday. [http://www.nccpl.com.pk/fipi-new/index.php] * U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday as Portugal's credit rating downgrade and a weak Treasury note auction stirred concerns about sovereign debt. ICE London Brent for May <LCOc1> declined 34 cents to $79.28. [O/R] * Gold regained strength on Thursday after hitting a 6-week low the previous day, but a strong U.S. dollar capped gains while uncertainties about the outcome of a European Union summit drove some investors away. Spot gold <XAU=> was at $1,088.20 an ounce by 0305 GMT, partly due to a rebound in the euro, up $1.70 from New York's notional close. On Wednesday, gold dropped to as low as $1,084.85 an ounce, its weakest since Feb. 12, due to falling euro.
