Aijalon Mahli Gomes had taken part in anti-Pyongyang rallies in South Korea and was moved to tears by accounts of rights abuses in the North, said the activist, Jo Sung-Rae. The North announced Monday that Gomes, 30, from Boston, would face trial for illegal entry "as his crime has been confirmed". Gomes, an English teacher in South Korea, apparently crossed the border from China on January 25, one month after missionary Robert Park did the same. Gomes met Park last November, said Jo, a Seoul-based associate of Park and member of a group called Pax Koreana. "I believe he may have gone to North Korea after being inspired by Park," Jo told AFP. Jo said Gomes attended rallies in the South on December 30 and January 12 calling for freedom for North Koreans. "I have a picture showing him praying and weeping at that time. I remember he was a quiet but devout Christian who was very interested in the rights of North Koreans." Jo said that while Gomes had not mentioned any plans to go to the North, "I believe his firm faith as a Christian prompted him to make a dangerous journey to North Korea as Park did." Park walked into the North across a frozen border river on Christmas Day calling on leader Kim Jong-Il to quit because of rights abuses. North Korea freed Park in February. Its official news agency quoted him as saying he had been misled by false Western propaganda. Gomes taught English at an elementary school north of Seoul from April 2008 to March last year. Colleagues described him as kind, popular and deeply devout. The US State Department has said it would continue to monitor the situation through the Swedish embassy in Pyongyang to ensure the detainee has representation in any legal proceedings. In March last year the communist state detained two female US television journalists for illegal entry. It sentenced them to 12 years of hard labour but pardoned them when former US president Bill Clinton flew to Pyongyang last August and met Kim.
