ADVERTISEMENT Animal sanctuaries and equestrian centers have found themselves in the path of the monster wildfire that has consumed more than 121,000 acres (48,967 hectares) in the mountains above the city since breaking out last week. Los Angeles city officials said Tuesday they feared that they may run out of stables to house horses rescued from the blaze. "The front is so big that animals had to be moved from so many different areas and had to fill many different stalls," said Hugh Briefman, the Los Angeles city animal control officer. Briefman has already overseen efforts to lead more than 600 horses to safety since the fire broke out in the Angeles National Forest. "Because the fire is slow moving, we were able to get the horses out," Briefman told AFP. Some horses were taken to Southern Californias Santa Anita racetrack while others were transported by truck to a suburban community college in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley. Others were transported north to the Ventura County fairgrounds up the Pacific coast. "They've gone all over the place," Briefman said. By Tuesday, the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, near the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, had evacuated horses and bedded them down in 330 of its 470 horse stalls. "They quiet down once they know theyre safe and everybody's gets a good nights sleep," said equestrian center staffer Karen Sund. Though all horses in the fire's target area have been evacuated and Briefman said that if the blaze spreads to other horse-friendly communities, there will be too few stables. "The fires everywhere," he said. "Were running out of places to take them." The Wildlife Waystation animal sanctuary near the frontline of the fire was the scene of an extensive evacuation late Monday, with 21 of the sanctuarys chimpanzees now at the Los Angeles Zoo. "We had eight staff members that went up to assist, they were there until past dark," said zoo spokesman Jason Jacobs, with the refugee chimps housed in an off-exhibit area away from the zoo's main chimpanzee community. No animals have been reported killed or seriously injured, said Briefman. Briefman worked 26 hours straight evacuating animals from the Wildlife Waystation. "We moved llamas. We moved ostriches, emus, rheas. Sheep goats, various types of pigs, wild boar. Wild pigs are extremely dangerous." One ostrich being evacuated stood more than seven feet tall and weighed more than 200 pounds. "I'm six foot three inches, and Im looking up at him," Briefman told AFP. Los Angeles Animal Services official Karen Knipscheer said while the evacuation of horses had been exhausting, moving smaller animals had gone smoothly. A total of 18 cats, 23 dogs, three birds, two pygmy goats, one mouse and one tortoise have been moved to city animal facilities since the blaze erupted. "They're all doing great," Knipscheer said.
